iPod Wont Mount When Holding CTRL + Shift

Alas, I'm still having problems stopping my iPod from auto-syncing. I did as recommended, plugged it in while holding down Shift and CTRL. However, the darn thing never mounts. I don't have a Firewire or USB 2.0 connection; but the USB 1.1 (or whatever) has always worked just fine for my 3G 15GB iPod and now, my new 4G 30GB iPod Photo.

The USB port recognizes there's a high-speed device plugged in and once it recognized that it was an iPod. But it doesn't appear in my iTunes source list. Now, it keeps telling me it has found a new USB mass storage device and asks me to install it with the disk it came with. I just don't know what to think of that.

I'm bound and determined not to lose the songs that are on my iPod through auto-syncing, because after a hard drive fiasco, they're my only copies of some purchased songs. Any help is much appreciated.
