What do you use your Notes section of your ipod for?

So far, I don't have any real use for my Ipod Notes sections, so I loaded it with 100 Vegetarian recipes just for kicks.
Anyone else here have any creative uses for Ipod Notes?

ItsLunchBox - the mactracker can be downloaded and put on the iPod. If you look to the right on the site you will see the iPod listed & you can put it in the notes section on the iPod.

I have an ebook in my notes section.

how do you get around the 4k limit on text files?

yea, it would be really cool if you could associate information from text files with the song that is playing, maybe display the comments field in scroll text and have it display the album cover at the same time.

As far as I know, Apple hasn't updated the Notes functionality on the iPod photo's to allow you to embed pictures with the Notes.

You can't really get around the 4k note size limit. What you can do though is link each page to the next. The Notes function allows you to provide embedded links to other Notes. So, after reading 4k of notes, you can have a link to take you to the next 4k file.

The other thing you can do is store the text as a Contact instead. Contacts don't have a size limit. This is one way to get Notes on 1/2G iPods as the Notes function was only added since the 3G iPod's came out.

I used to use Goolge Get too Given that it's use is somewhat limited on the iPod (View News Headlines at the time of Download),. It would have been cool if the iPod had Wi-Fi Access and could access the Web for further info. As many Headlines from Google get suddenly brea...

I also use Podtenter for when I go out! :D

I also have a few .XML Files in my Notes as well granted they don't do much though.

Errors
Memory
Preferences

In each of the above cases you'd create a new .txt document (or Mac equv.), and type "<xxxxxxxxxx>" w/o "" and save as .XML or just rename such Files as xxxxxxxxxx.xml

The iPod can also do ROT13 decodeing. Cut the following into an empty .txt Document. And move it to your iPod's Notes Section.

<ROT13>Vaqrrq, EBG13 vf pbby orpnhfr gur fnzr pbqr rapelcgf naq qrpelcgf, fb lbh pbhyq chg guvf pbqr ba lbhe vCbq va <EBG13> gntf naq ernq vg, ohg gura ntnva lbh'ir cebonoyl whfg tbbtyrq sbe n EBG13 pbairegre lbh purncfxngr.</ROT13>

When I go on trips, I put hotel info (addresses, phone & confirm numbers) on it. That saves me from having to carry around a bunch of papers.

About the 4k limit: there is a website that will break a larger doc up. You'll need it to be in plain text format, I imagine. I've never used it.

If you're on a Mac and you want to put stuff on the iPod over 4kb, use Book2Pod, it's in the software section of this site. It's a little freeware app that will split it down into 4kb chunks that link to each other.

In my Notes section, I have Pod2Go stuff (driving directions, weather, local movie listings, news, unread email) and StickyBrain (a Mac app) syncs with iPod. I sync notes with stuff like weight & measure conversions, lists of area codes, reference things like that. I also have a couple books (Tao Teh Ching, Art of War) in there through StickyBrain.

Since I've recently started listening to podcasts, I'm almost always behind.

Now all I do is keep a note on my ipod with bookmarks for various podcasts I listen to and it's so easy to remember. (I've got a horrible memory.)

If only there were a way to edit the notes on the ipod, my podcast bookmark note would be even easier!

Just convert your podcasts to AAC in iTunes, then, if you're on a Mac, climb down (It's really not designed to support you--what're you thinking?!?), go to Doug's AppleScript Archive, and get "Make Bookmarkable". That way, you can listen to them at faster speed, too, and not be so far behind!:D

Personally, I use the Notes with StickyBrain so all my Stickies are on there, plus stuff like the U.S. Constitution, Bill of Rights, etc.

Living in L.A. means hundreds of places to visit -- restaurants, concert venues, museums, theatres, parks, beaches, shopping strips, record stores -- and I can't possibly remember all the places I've been. I've been frustrated too many times after not being able to remember something like where exactly that "really nice Ethiopian eatery in West L.A." was located or which way I had to turn to hit the "Hollywood vintage store with the Sunday discount." Now I can keep freeway directions and cross-streets readily available at all times.

I go shopping for music quite often, too, and I keep an album wishlist that runs about 5 text files deep. It comes in handy when I'm browsing the tens of thousands of CDs at Amoeba Records...

That question has been asked many time in these Fourms. If you'd like more information please feel free to use the 'Search Button'. Give it '.M4a to .M4b' or 'Bookmarkable Audiobook' the press go!

->islareina

You can add any .txt File to the Notes Section on your iPod by simply connecting your iPod up to your PC. You might have to 'Enable Disk Mode' from within iTunes first. It may or may not be necessery for you to disable 'Hide Files and Folders' and enable 'Show File Extensions' from within 'Windows Explorer' for you to do this.

BTW: Note there is a cap of 4kb to each note. I think there might be a Program or Two, in the Downloads Section of the Lounge that you might use to import these .txt Files. And split them up if necessery...

Does someone know how to do this on a PC? It's just a matter of changing the file type. Try changing the suffix to .m4b and see what happens. You can always change it back if that doesn't work.

Barring that, you could get a Mac... :D

- Mactracker takes up the most - 300 notes about.
- Then I've got a load of jokes (Dirty Pocket Jokes - hilarious jokes intended for java phones, but - I made myself an iPod version), which take up some more.
- I had some ASCII art, but it needed a fixed width font, so it kinda messed up so i took it off.
- Basic Party Knowledge, one of those party things - pretty good.
- Casio codes, for the CMD40 watch of mine that can control TVs
- Michael Jackson jokes - lots of repeats but damn funny and so many I haven't gone through them all yet.
- OTG_Notes.txt - I type into it using iPodLinux! www.ipodlinux.org
- Podgroumet and podgourmet VE demos
- Podmeals
- Podtender 1.0
- Pod2Go daily syncs - lyrics, news (ipodlounge!) and weather (wunderground, but it's pretty bad for where I live in europe)
- humor.catweasel.org - I'm releasing a program soon to download this to iPods
- iPodLinux forums downloader program (I wrote, will release with jokes one)
- Joy of Tech (needs iPodLinux for the images)
- Weather (BBC and meteo suisse - will be in iPod Sync program I'll release shortly)
- Bible, download using PodWord! http://peterburk.free.fr/podword (my program)
- Text from St Patrick's breastplate, cause it's cool.
= 839 Notes (out of 1000)

BTW, check out http://peterburk.free.fr/pint if you want to read books on your iPod. I use it for the jokes digest.

The obligatory Cinema listings and weather reports via ipodagent ( news isn't really useful for me neither is email since I keep up to date with both the information on my ipod always gets out of date)

Some books, I've got some Terry Pratchett and 1984 on there

A periodic table with a lot of info about elements, atomic mass, radius etc. google: periodicpod

Some Shakespeare and the US Constitution

Some other miscellaneous information. I might put some measurement conversions on there, that's always useful. Some other useful stuff i'll put on there are radio frequencies and some useful phone numbers.

A list of all the helpful OSX hints for if there is a problem, no sense keeping them on the computer if that where the problem is!

I just moved, so I put a list of radio stations on so I could break it down by genre, that way when I need the local news I don't try listening to the kiddie pop station.

And a "Bartender" folder so that I can always have a new drink instead of ordering the same damn thing everytime. And then if the barkeep doesn't know it... just show him the recipe.

liked the idea for news/cinema listing etc via ipod agent. i was thinking local train & bus times'd be pretty useful too. I'm doing a quick cocktail list now before i go on holiday to croatia; yesterday i trawled a bunch of translation sites for popular phrases (as well as transcribing some of my own) plus local info & customs etc, saves taking a dictionary.

If more & more people start doing this it'd be worth having people's efforts uploaded, plus (ideally) someone to write a little app that'll do the stitching work, e.g. for the bartender thing something that'd make a menu page with a simple list of each drink name linked to an individual page for each one, BUT with an option to add queries & searches, so that you could have a link called "vodka drinks" with a query "page contains 'vodka'"
Ipodlounge, you fancy hosting? it'd be smaaaaaaaall....

i put lyrics for hard to understand songs (i.e. louie louie hahaha) and things along that line. i also use it to store driving directions to places (i travel alot, and of course always bring my ipod with me, so it makes perfect sense to do so!) and finally i use it to store bookmarks so if im away from my computer, i can still go to websites that i need. i keep my usb cable on me at all times, so i dont have to manually type in those url's. i can just hook up, then copy-paste from that txt file :D

I keep some info about the new video game consoles, along with some iPod info...and i just recently typed up a slightly threatening 'please return' note...and i think i'll hunt the web for ipod/ video game articles...

Oh! And right now, I have 1 Timothy 4:12 ("Don't let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in faith and in purity") and Romans 12:2 ("Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renweing of you rmind. Then you will be able to test and approve whawt Go'd Will is--His good, pleasing, and perfect Will.") on there, and if I decide any more verses are my favs, i will add them...hee hee

Just a random question:

What do you guys use the "Notes" feature for on your iPod?

I personally don't use them anymore. I went through a cooking phase where I would put up all these recipes and stuff... then I tried lyrics at one point, but now it's sort of a useless feature (as my nano displays them if I want to take the time to put it on there).

I use it for, well basically nothing

I used it once for the weather forecasts for the week, but then i got tired of putting it into disk mode. I personally think that there should be a notes editing software built in to iTunes

I have the Constitution which got me out of trouble when I had it out in study hall. Actually we can have it in study hall anyway, but my social studies teacher really liked it.

Uh I think I still have some notes for my GCSE German speaking exam... which was almost 2 years ago. Perhaps they should be deleted.

Stuff I want to borrow from the library.
Because I just moved back from another city, and the books that I want to read are actually stocked by this library, so I'll finish that before I start contemplating buying stuff again.
