Mac OS X Tiger

Hey guys.
Can somebody tell me the difference between OS X Panther and OS X Tiger? Is there much of difference besides new features? Are these features useful or just nice to have, but not a neccessity? Thanks in advance for the replies. :)

There's a bit of information there, including some teething problems.

Despite Apples sales pitch, 10.4 is not much of an upgrade. There are some new features and some nice to haves, but nothing that is vital to update immediately, or even in the near future. Unless you have a G5, your system can not take advantage of the 64 Bit stuff. A high end graphics card/G5 is also required to take advantage of new Core Graphics as well.

Dashboard is a poor substitute for Konfabulator. The Safari RSS implementation is nice, if you like/use RSS. Safari 2 is not really much better or different from Safari 1. Spotlight is a nice bit of technology that gives near instant results for any search of you computer or Hard Drives. I have not had occasion to test/use the smart folders implementation.

Based on your sig, I'd say just wait until you get your iMac.

Not worth the $129 upgrade if you ask me, glad I didn't pay it. ;)

Seriously, it is PRE INSTALLED on ALL new macs. This was actually the main reason I waited for my G5 20", because I didn't want to spend extra money on OSX.4, yet I really wanted the latest.

Sorry neb. That thread, while interesting, didn't really answer her questions. Try giving a direct answer next time.

On a side note, I didn't do 90% of what the last post in that thread reccomended and I didn't have most of the problems he spoke of.

That be a good move. The only reason I bought Tiger was because I got a massive discount on it. I kinda like Spotlight though...

Fair do's. I made a little bit of effort though, wouldn't be too hard to acknowledge it...

I have to say I have found Safari 2 very much better than 1. It is quicker and it doesn't seem to get bogged down like 1 did (one reason I switched from it to Camino).

The Dashboard is a poor substitute for Konfabulator - the widgets are too big for me and I prefer the ability to keep them on the desktop as opposed to tucked away. I have read there may be some security issues with the whole widget thing and care should be taken to only download from recognised sites.

I have Tiger on my G3 600 iBook and it seems to be running fine - obviously the full potential of Tiger isn't being explored right now, but hopefully I can scrape enough cash together to replace my ailing PC with a nice new G5 iMac (20" and 2GHz...)

It definitely doesn't. Which is one of the reasons I switched back from Firefox to Safari. The RSS reader can still be improved by a lot though...

I personally like Dashboard WAY more than konfab. I hated having the widgets floating around my computer getting in they way of my desktop picture. ;)

I have Dashboard hotcornered and that is nice.

You can have the widgets appear only on Konspose (F8) if you wish..

Yup. I find Dashboard a little chunky but since its default, I just use it...

I prefer Dashboard to Konfabulator, but that's just me.

If you don't liken it to Konfabulator, it won't be like it. It's a similar application, but not a copy, it's more of a fourth feature of Expose.

When you get some good widgets for it, it is awesome.

Plus, Dashboard widgets are *so* easy to make. I just finished my first one in about three evenings.

Isn't that what you find at the bottom of Guinness cans?

Yes, that is what they call them. They put them in the bottles now too...
