What is this Rss Feed stuff anyway

I was reading on the front page of Ipodlounge about using the Automator in The Tiger OS to convert Rss Feeds to audio and downloading them to the Ipod. It also mentioned that the 10.x OS has this capability also, But with more steps.
So can anyone explain what this all means, or where I can read more about it?
