Student suspended for taking cellphone call from mom in Iraq

The more I read, the more disgusted I am at the educational system. How much more bureacratic can school administrators be?

You know what, it sucks. It really does, but you know, rules are rules. What happens when someone else get's caught talking on a phone during school hours and says "It's my mom, shes in the hospital" or "It's my dad, he's a crab fisherman (the most dangerous job in the world according to sources)" Where do you draw the line. When is one person more important than another and a phone call is acceptable during school hours. And what about the kid that says "It's my mom, shes in Iraq" and shes not.

You have to view it from the Administrator's view. You see a student, outside the school (probably against the rules) talking on the phone (against the rules). The teacher didn't walk up and say "Who is it?" She told him to hang up.

The kid also was no angel admitting to have handling the situation wrong and was cursing at teachers. Also, the school made an attempt to correct the situation by trying to make an arrangement to allow his mother to call the school instead of his cell phone.

Rules are rules (No Cell Phones). The situation was handled poorly by both sides, but the boy was in the wrong for the most part.

Wow, I never thought it would get this bad, at our school, they just take it till the end of the day first offense, maybe a detention.

The suspension is absurd, making him stop the call, would have been fine IMO, he broke the rules

But on a side note, I do find it fun to put oyur phone on silent, hide it and then call people during class and get their phones taken away :D

But wouldn't you guys agree that suspension for a year is rather harsh? Over here, they'd just confiscate the cell and make the parents collect it...

Yeah, at my school if you get caught using a phone or listening to music in class you firstly get told to put it away. Then sometimes the teacher will ask again, or she will take it 'till the end of the day. Never heard of someone getting detention at my school because of it. I'm starting to think this was made up. :p

The reason the kid got suspended was not for the phone, but was for his insubordination and cursing at teachers after they told him to hang up the phone.

"They're not supposed to use them for conversing back and forth during school because if they were allowed to do that, they could be text messaging each other for test questions," said Alfred Parham, assistant principal at Spencer.

Francois said he told the teacher, "This is my mom in Iraq. I'm not about to hang up on my mom."

Parham said the teen's suspension was based on his reaction when he was asked to give up the cell phone.

"Kevin got defiant and disorderly," Parham said. "When a kid becomes out of control like that they can either be arrested or suspended for 10 days. Now being that his mother is in Iraq, we're not trying to cause her any undue hardship; he was suspended for 10 days."

I am with the kid. If my mother was in Iraq fighting a war (unjust or not) I would have done the exact same thing.

Luckily I live in Canada, and at least around here we don't have absurd rules like that.

I think that it's BS.. He gets to talk to his mom very little and they won't let him talk during LUNCH. They should at least be considerate that he doesn't talk to his mom much and just let him talk.

Well we never know the true side of the story but I think that both parties could have been a little nicer and more open to each other.
