cool skin.shuffle cardboard case

I have developed a cheap but stylish cardboard case for the shuffle. It is meant to be truly individual, because every skin.shuffle _you_ select the printed cardboard for from sixpacks, sweets boxes or anything you find attractive. I think this is cooler than making your shuffle 'individual' by buying something that thousands of other people own aswell.

I put the instructions and the layout on www.skinshelf.de in the extras! section.

Hope you like it and I would love to see what you come up with!

Thought I had the pic attached...
Seems I can't attach it because I'm not an 'established' member. I would greatly appreciate it if a moderaor could fix this for my post. The image URL is www skinshelf.de/fileadmin/_temp_/skin.shuffle.composite.jpg
and in my previous post maybe you can fix the skinshelf URL?

Thanks!

your URLs dont work because you forgot the "." after "www". you can fix this yourself, theres an "edit" button on the right hand side.

i dont know about attatching pictures, but theres a "trick" to putting pictures in posts here for some reason. heres how you do it:

{img=www.skinshelf.de/fileadmin/_temp_/skin.shuffle.composite.jpg}{/img}
(but use square brackets "[" instead of {)

Thanks for your reply and for posting the image. I am not able to include URLs in my posts because I am a new member to the forums. So I removed the '.' on purpose so people still know where to get the files.

I'm making one out of a Wheat Thins box right now. I can't figure out for the life of me how to get the front hole cut into something even resembling a circle without a great deal of effort. Any tips?

You are right, that is pretty much the most difficult thing about it. And it is important you put some care in because it is so visible.
The scalpel works pretty good. The blade will bend a bit so you can get a decent curvature. It takes a bit of time though.

Nice work!

How do I view the English version of your site? It says for english, click top menu, but I don't see that anywhere. Also, is it possible to make a shuffle skin from playing cards?

Thanks

Johan, I don't suppose you'd be willing to share a blank pattern as an image file, instead of just the PDF, would you? I'd like to try printing some of these on some card stock...

Cool, but on the bit with the instructions even if you are on English its still in German

I'm sorry for having linked to the German version. This is fixed now. Thanks for pointing it out.

GreatGraySkwid, I have converted the PDF into a PNG now aswell. Just make sure that whatever program you use to print it, that it keeps its scale (the PNG is 9.7 x 15.4 cm / 3.8 x 6.1 inches). If it works please post a pic (that's why I shared it, after all, to see other people use it :)

why don't you just try it kate. It's not very hard, esp. if you use thin cardboard for your first skin.shuffle. Just take your time, the first one I did took me roughly an hour w/ printing and glueing. And when you're done you can show it off in public ;)

Thanks, Johann. I'll try to get ahold of some card stock and give this a try in the next few days, then I'll put up an image or two.

Alrighty, tried one last night with mixed results. The pattern worked great, but there was some damage at the creases, as you can see:

I made that one from two-ply card stock, which I think was overkill and also made both clean cuts and hard creases more difficult (even with deep scoring. I just did a two-sided print with a slightly cleaned up image on a single sheet of card stock, which I think will work better. I might also use some spray clear-coat, or perhaps just artist's fixative, before I fold and glue the next version.

# 20 Re: cool skin.shuffle cardboard case
Great Evan, thanks for sharing, great image (makes good use of the squids head!) About the scoring: Those edges where you need hard creases I score from the printed side. Though you will then be able to look "inside" the cardboard, It looks cleaner (it doesn't lose any color) and allows harder creases. Only those round bends I score from the inside. Did you print the pattern on the other side of the cardboard? If so, how did you get everything aligned so well?

# 21 Re: cool skin.shuffle cardboard case
I printed the image on one sheet of card stock and the pattern on the other. I then used Spray Adhesive to join the two sheets back to back. Since the image is laser printed rather than dye (like the dye-sublimation printers used on a cardboard box), scoring on the printed side would damage the image. I think a layer of clear coat is the way to go, there, and careful scoring on the pattern side...

# 22 Re: cool skin.shuffle cardboard case
Well I'm not sure what you mean by "scoring damages the print" so I've attached a close-up pic of a "prototype" (notice the printed line at the lanyard). I would suggest to put the clear coat on after you have glued everything, so that the cardboard doesn't wear as quickly...

# 23 Re: cool skin.shuffle cardboard case
First, I want to thank the parent post for the cool idea...I experimented with it this afternoon and I was quite pleased with the results on the first try.

I found that it works really well if you make one using some bristol board, or some very hard cardboard (like the cardboard sheets that come in packs of high-resolution/photo-quality inkjet paper). The resulting case is really sturdy and is much more resilient than the thinner cardboard I've seen used in the boxes I've looked at around my house (chicken soup, granola bars, etc.). The only problem is that it's really hard to bend easily without creasing and looking ugly, so one solution I came up with was to make very fine, closely spaced scoring lines with a knife where the tab joins the main body of the case.

I've also observed that the tab better holds when you thread it underneath the case, and through the hole, instead of just into the hole as in the instructions.

My only problem is that there's no design for users who don't use the lanyard cap. I'm sure the necessary modifications are easy, but nonetheless another .pdf template would be nice to see.

# 24 Re: cool skin.shuffle cardboard case
hi rampancy, thanks for your comments. glad it worked for you right away. You're right about the chicken soup cardboard, it's so thin because the weight of the soup powder is pretty much negligible. So the sixpack cardboard is better suited, that is thicker as it is used for much greater weights.
About closely spaced scoring the cardboard - I noted that on point 4 of the instructions. Good you figured it out anyway.
Threading the tab like you suggest is a nice way too. I think everyone will have to see which works better for every specific case.
I would make a template for the normal cap if someone could post me exact dimensions of it. I seem to have lost mine because I didn't use it :(

Also rampancy, it would be cool if you could mail me a picture of your skin.shuffle so I can put it in the thread. I think you cannot post it because you're a new member (had to deal with that too, as you can see from the previous posts in this thread).

Thanks again for your comments and suggestions!

# 25 Re: cool skin.shuffle cardboard case
Thanks Johann. I sent some pictures to the email address you gave me.

I also have some good tips that I forgot to mention. Transparent tape serves as a good way to reinforce the tab, as it'll probably be the part of the case that will wear out the fastest. Also, to provide protection for the shuffle's control wheel and button, you could try taping a thin piece of transparent plastic to the inside of the case over the hole for the controls (I haven't tried this yet -- I thought about Saran Wrap but maybe plastic from grocery store produce bags would work better).

I'm thinking about a way to allow seeing of the shuffle's status LED's; I suppose that using a hole punch could do it, but I'm trying to think of something which could make a smaller hole.
rampancy at 2007-11-15 15:58:27 >
# 26 Re: cool skin.shuffle cardboard case
oh no, just lost the post I was going to send :( Anyway, in short I was going to say: Thanks rampancy for the pics (attached) and the tips. I have not tried taping the tab but I did make a plastic window for the hole. I used part of a lid that comes with yoghurt or spreads and cut it to the size of the width of the shuffle and 4cm in length. I upgraded a case by putting tiny drops of liquid glue on the inside of the case, not too close to the hole. Slid the plastic strip in and used a pen to apply some pressure. Works great! and doesn't spoil the looks. And the material is very durable, too!
About the leds, I think just making a slit 2 by 4mm where they sit should do the job. that can also be done with the knife used to cut everything else (no curvature there). If someone else can think of a more elegant way to this, please post!
I'll put new layouts on the site soon, one will be with thinner lines so when you're printing on high resolution paper you won't notice them so much like on rampancies'.

Thanks again, rampancy for your tips!

Edit: I've uploaded three new layouts, one with the hole for the LEDs on the frontside and a version of both the new and the old one with thin lines.

After it was suggested to have a skin.shuffle for the non-lanyard users I've come up with a new layout, available for download on the skinshelf.de site. I also added versions with a hole for the led.
Have fun!

Hi everyone

just had the idea to use postcards for the skin.shuffle and it works very well. the "cap" layout fits easily on a standard 15 x 10 cm postcard. I've updated the "lanyard" layout to fit on it aswell.

Don't forget to post some pics!!

thanks shufflez! My skins have lasted till today, without being treated overly caucious. It will however wear quite quickly if you put it in and out of your jeans pocket often. But then: why would you put your beautiful skin.shuffle into your pocket where no one can see it anyway?

My second gen card-stock version has shown very little wear over the past month. I'm quite pleased with it, and plan to make a new one with the lanyard-free design, for those occasions I've got it in a pocket or something.

[edit: except, silly me, I just realized that I need to ask Johann for another PNG version for that! Is that doable, Johann?]

Well, my latest skin.shuffle is done (I still need to clear-coat it, but that can wait for tonight). I call it the Skin Skin:

That's the back of the Skin, obviously. The front is magnificently (IMNSHO) PG-13 ( http://www.thehumblest.net/SkinSkin1.jpg)!

Everybody comments on how the controls are in the right place...

Sorry, Johann...forgot about your question. I did clearcoat the first one, and I think it has helped it stand up to the elements (i.e., I wear it while I work out, and the sweat hasn't seemed to damage it at all). I decided not to bother with it on this latest design, though, because it's basically only on when the Shuffle is riding in my pocket, and thus already protected from the elements.

Anyway, thanks again for your great patterns!
