iPod wont mount after OS X froze and reboot
Hi,
I'm new to the Forum and hopeful someone might help with this persistent problem.
Every couple of months my Mac OS (10.3) will freeze and require rebooting. If my iPod is attached, once I reboot, the iTunes and the HD utility can't see the iPod.
I've called Apple several times and it seems to take 10-15 minutes for the person to understand the issue and then just tell me i have to reformat the iPod and start from scratch.
This seems an insane requirement. There's nothing wrong with the iPod. All data was in tact. No transfer of files was taking place at the time of the OS freeze.
Surely there must be a way to tell the OS and iPod that it's okay to talk with each other again.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Stephen
ps: forgot to mention that i've tried all the basic stuff... rebooting the OS numerous times, trying to eject/mount using Disk Utility, etc.
pss: Another potential factor is that I am using the Enable Disk Use option so that i can also store copies of important documents.

have you tried putting the iPod into disk mode...

once you've rebooted your mac?

I had to hard reboot whilst connected and now podless.
I'm using iPod (3rd gen 20Gb) with Tiger running iTunes 4.8
So far tried to restore in disk mode connected using two different firewire cables on two different Macs. The iPod mounts as an external hard drive in Finder (i.e. not as iPod icon), then iTunes detects that the software is not up to date. Asks if I'd like to update, iPod updater 2005-03-23 opens then the iPod unmounts and I am not given the option to restore.
Disk Utility fails to erase the iPod's HD
Any other suggestions welcome.
Thanks
