free space on drive discrepancy (ipod vs itunes)
Under 'settings' then 'about', my ipod says i have 2729 songs and 10.5 GB available. When my ipod is connected to itunes, itunes reports that my ipod has 2729 songs, but only about 2 GB available. (It's a 20GB 3rd gen ipod).
Any idea why they report such different findings, and which one is right?
Thanks--

Did u try restarting your ipod?? If that doesn't work you could restore your ipod and then upload your mp3 again. This happened to me when i first got my ipod. I uploaded 2 gigs of music and my ipod only registered about 1/3 of a gig.
I restored (rebooting didn't work) my ipod and everything is fine now.

I just did a reset, and the ipod still gives the same figures. For some reason I tend to believe itunes when it says only 2 GB are available, not the ipod which still says 10 GB are available.
Doing a total reformat and reloading all my music would be a last resort. Right now the ipod battery is so weak I can't transfer much more than 1 GB at a time to it before the battery dies (I use plain USB 'cause I don't have firewire). Other than the bad battery and this discrepancy in reports of hard drive availability, the ipod is performing fine.
Thanks for the reply.

I've read several posts in these forums from people having trouble with the iPod displaying incorrect free space information. If I recall correctly, nobody has come up with a solution. Some iPods seem to report free space correctly while others just don't. Best bet is to rely on what is reported in iTunes and ignore the figures reported by the iPod.

I had the same issue, tried about 20 differenrt things (uninstalled and reinstalled everyfrickenthing) & nothing worked. I had to restore, and then all was well.

Yeah itunes is generally the more accurate source for capacities on your ipod. If u really want your capacities to be correct most likely your going to have to restore and then reload all your mp3.
Well since your USB is not powered chances are your using USB 1.1 and it will take an awfull long time to reload all 2729 songs.
Trust me it's worth it to get a firewire or USB2.0 PCI card. I got the firewire card (due to lousy experiences with add on USB 2.0 cards) and the load times is about 10x's faster.

Right now my Settings>About shows that I have 137MB of free space left on my iPod. iTunes says that I have 7.20GB free.
I use an iTalk to record interviews for work every day. Apparently the iTalk relies on the Settings>About free space amount because I can't record any more than 137MB right now.
I may have to reformat my iPod, but I'm sure this problem will arise again.

Well.. It appears I've solved the problem. After trying nearly everything including running 'Error Checking' from windows drive tools, I tried chkdsk from the command line:
chkdsk F: /f /x
/f for fix erros
/x for unmount the drive if necessary
Post a reply if this helps you out.

Hey chensler,
I've got the same problem with iTalk saying that there's not enough space to record. I just updated my ClickWheel to version 3.1, but it didn't help. Tried your chkdsk command - this gives you the correct amount of free space but doesn't change the entry in the 'About' menu - the one iTalk is refering to.
I'm helpless...there seem to be only a few people with this particular problem - formating and refilling every month can't be the solution!
