Is restarting really necessary?

I just got a 20 gig ipod and am very pleased with its features. Everything is very reliable and user friendly on the ipod, but I am having some trouble with itunes.
When I want to updated my ipod through itunes, I just plug it in and it auto-updates, but it seems like I can only do this once or else I have to restart my computer. I pretty much have to reboot my computer every time I want to update my ipod. Does anyone else have this problem?

Through auto-sync, your iTunes will update your iPod only if you have added new songs to your iTunes library. For example, if you added some songs to your iTunes library then plugged your iPod into your computer, it should automatically add those songs to your iPod. Then if you add some more songs to your iTunes library your iPod might not update (some have a problem with auto-sync that it doesn't automatically eject their iPods, I am one as well). Sometimes you will have to eject your iPod, unlpug it, then plug it back in for iTunes to add those new songs to your iPod.

What OS are you running (Windows XP, ME, 98, 2000) and how are you connecting your iPod to your computer? You might want to download the latest version of iTunes off the internet (or update your older version) and download the latest firmware updater for the iPod and restore it. Restoring your iPod will erase everything on it but that is not a problem is you have everything backed up on your computer.

I'll usually add a few songs, update, unplug, add a few more, and try and update, but it won't work.

What do you mean by firmware?

Thanks for your help

PS. I run XP

Firmware is like the OS that the iPod uses. It is what you see when you turn it on. I would go to http://www.apple.com/ipod/download/ and download the latest updater. Once you install the updater, plug in your iPod, and update it. If the software won't let you click the update button then click on restore. This will erase everything on your iPod and make it just like when you opened your iPod from its box. Restoring the iPod fixes many common problems. So I suggest restoring it.

If that doesn't work then uninstall iTunes. Make sure to delete the folder where you installed iTunes as well (ie C:\Program Files\iTunes). Delete that folder then re-install iTunes.
