Disc mode/Manual update questions
Please choose the appropriate forum for this topic. Thank you. When I set my iPod to manually update, is the iPod itself set to disc mode, or does the version of iTunes I'm using recognize that it should not auto-sync?
The computer I have at home has a very small hard drive (only about 7GB), so I can't auto sync my 40G. I've been putting music on little by little. I have more space on my computer at work, so I'd like to be able to use it here, too. Do I need to worry that it will start an auto-sync when I plug it in?
Thanks!

It isn't set to disc mode, the itunes will recognize it shouldn't auto-synch. Just make sure that option is set for both computers you have itunes on. On a side note, I didn't even know 7gb drives still existed.

What you need to do is put the iPod on "manually manage songs and playlists" to stop the auto sync process when the iPod is connected.
-Go to Edit>Preferences>iPod while it's connected and set it to manual
-Once set you can drag-n-drop the songs onto the iPod
-Make sure you do not turn on auto sync ever since this will erase the iPod contents.
-You will be able to use it on both computers without losing the iPod contents.
-Setting it to manual sync is also setting it for disk mode and you can use the HD as a storage drive at the same time.
-You will also have to eject the iPod from iTunes after use.
If the iPod is set to manual already then you don't have to worry.
If it is not set to manual then press shift + alt + ctrl (or on a Mac it's Command + Option) to stop the iPod auto sync process. See "Simple Guide" in my sig.

I know, I know. It's old. OOOOOLLLLLLLLLLD. My girlfriend had a laptop with a bigger one, but it was stolen. We couldn't afford a new one, especially since we were able to get a loaner desktop from her cousin who works in IT.
It works. It's slow, but it works. I just have to rip five CDs, transfer them and then delete the files. If my iPod falters before I'm able to get a new computer, then I'm screwed...that's part of the reason I want to get things moving on the computer at work.

Thank you! I couldn't quite remember what that key combo was to prevent the auto-sync. Looks like I'm ready to roll now.
