Complete Jeep installation guide with pics

Please choose the appropriate forum for this topic. Thank you. Okay guys. I finally installed my iPod into my Grand Cherokee and I couldn't be happier. I thought I should share my experience with all of you so that you could avoid some of the impatience and loss of time I went through figuring out all of the quirks. I take it if your reading you've atleast done some homework, so I won't spoon feed you the whole way, but it should give the gist.

Well, we begin by taking the OEM radio out. Got it? Okay, good...deep breathe (((one in, one out))). Don't worry it's almost over. :D

First order of business -- I thought I should install the internal cigarette lighter to charge the iPod while it plays. Why not first? Exactly. So pull back (in my case) or completely take off the panel that has the existing cigarette jack on it.

I read of almost everyone using their beloved vampire clips -- and as cool as they sound I just went for what I felt was the easier (read:lazzier) solution. So, I simply took the two wires coming off the cigarette lighter and snipped right through them. I then took my new cigarette lighter for the iPod and attached the ends of its wires with the exposed ends of the existing wires. I secured them together with a wire nut for each set of wires. In the above picture you will see a red and black cable coming from out of the electrical tape -- each going to a different nut. You will also notice a red and black wire coming from my hand (for the new iPod charger) which also goes into it's respective nut. Also, although you can't see it there is also another set of black and red wires that come out from these nuts and go to wherever the original wiring went before it cut it in half. Sorry for the long write up, but this is quite possibly the most painful part of the whole experience. It's cake from here. So grab a cold one -- you'll be chilling out real soon.

[b]Of note[b]: If you noticed in piture 2 I took off a very small part of my center console. At this point (after installing the cigarette lighter) I wrapped this cigarette lighter and all of it's accompanying cables behind the peice hanging forward and it is all resting in this small area above my gear shift.

I decided to go with the PIE adapter as my car does not have an aux input on the stock radio. This unit helps make the entire hard-wired iPod experience possible. So, on the top of the adapter I clipped on the cord that connects to my stock Jeep radio and on the bottom end I attached an RCA conversion cable.

Next, I found a nice little nook I could snake the adapter cable (top part in the previous picture) up through so it has easy access to the back of my radio.

I then pulled the cable all the way through and found a nice resting spot for the actual unit itself.

Of Note: Remember before how we slipped the cigarette lighter and it's cabling behind everything in order to rest in the exposed center console cavity? Well, we are going to do the same exact thing here -- except you will be running the RCA converter cable behind everything instead.

Just to show you what I was talking about in both of the above 'Of Note' sections I am pulling up both the two cables running off from the cigarette lighter (with the actually cigarette lighter in my hand) as well as the RCA converter in order to show you how both are wrapped behind everything and are coming up from the abovementioned cavity in the center console.

This may not be the same for all cars -- but you should get the point; find an area where you can rest all of your slack, etc.

I also decided to use the Belkin Tunedock with lineout jack. So naturally at this point I plugged the end of the RCA converter cable into the lineout jack of the Belkin.

Next, I plugged that Belkin adapter into my iPod cigarette lighter which I installed during the first step.

Okay, know how we were wrapping all of the chords behind everything to rest in the center console cavity -- well we're going to do that again, but in the opposite direction. We are doing this so that the end of the Belkin cable (which connects to the iPod) comes out at a convenient spot in your dash. This can prove to be a bit tricky, but nothing a few scraths to your noggen can't fix.

Almost done! Now, just secure all those peices you've had dangling off thusfar (with the exception of the exposed center console cavity).

Take all of the slack that you have had resting in the center console cavity and move it to one side -- just for the sake of neatness. Last thing you would want is to get it tangling up somewhere it shouldn't be.

Although no photo for this last part -- it's quite simple.

1)Attach the converter cable into the back of your stock radio and place the radio back to where it is supposed to be.

2)I opted for a Bracketron for mounting my iPod -- which is customized for your specific model and make car and screws in at the same location and with the same screws for the right side of your radio.

Viola!

My only gripe about the entire project is the slight muddiness in the low end. I can pretty much bypass this effect by screwing with my EQ settings, but that inevitable makes me run my bass very low, giving it a small range of motion before it starts loosing it's clarity. However -- I'm not complaining -- in my eyes the benefits clearly outweigh any negative side effects.

Nice job, I have a 2001 grand cherokee that im trying to find a solution to. Unfortunately after discovering the pioneer adapter to be a piece of junk Ive reverted back to the factory unit you have installed and whenever the dension icelink becomes available off back order I think ill get one of those. By the way where did you get that mount from?

I have a 2001 Grand Cherokee Limited as well. I have a CD Changer in the back. Did you have to disconnect the changer from the back of your stereo?

Thanks :)

I just installed the iPod2Car adapter from crutchfield in my 2001 cherokee, I've heard some conflicting stories about its performance, but incase anyone wanted to know its performed as advertised so far...
