Car Hook up with Sony CDX

I have a 98 CDX - C680 head unit and I can't seem to get it hooked up with the ipod. It has the two red and white audio input holes in the back (says so in manual), and a BUS port for I guess a multi CD changer. I bought the RCA to stereo jack and pluged it into the red and white holes in the back of the Deck. Is that all I need to do?? THere is no AUX to switch to on the deck, just CD and AM/FM. So I plugged in the ipod and nothing happens, What am I doing wrong? Do i need to get a aux input adapter to plug into the BUS port or what? any help will be appreciated.

my educated guess is that the RCA inputs on the back of your head unit are actually pre-amp outputs. they are meant to send an audio signal to an amplifier and subwoofer. you will have to buy an interface that uses the cd changer port on your head unit. if you plug your ipod into the preamp out you could damage it. but anyway, that's my thought on your problem.

Sony uses that proprietary BUS system (called Unilink) to control peripherals. If the BUS connection isn't used (along with the RCA connections), then it won't work. About the only way to create an AUX is to buy an adapter called a XA-300 (you can get them at Crutchfield for $100 but you can find a coupon code that will give you $10 off and free shipping). Even with that you can't control the iPod through the head unit. ICE makes a unit that you could use if you don't have a CD changer connected already. It does control the iPod ($200 at Best Buy). Also newer Sony HU's sometimes have a feature called "aux lite" that allows you to use the RCA jacks for aux input instead of a CD changer.
