iPod install failed on my Harley-Davidson motorcycle

My 20GB 4th gen Ipod just died while testing it wired into my 2002 Harley Ultra Classic motorcycle. It is mounted in the TourPak using a Belkin AutoKit, which is plugged into a H-D cigarette lighter plug which I installed there. I have a mini stereo plug running from the Belkin, up through the bike frame and plugged into the stereo Aux Input. I also plugged a Griffin AutoClick Remote into the top of the iPod so I could control it from my seat. This whole system worked perfectly in the garage with the engine off and ignition ON. As soon as I started the engine and took it out for a road test, the iPod got real hot and froze up. Now it doesn't work at all. I have measured the voltage at the cig lighter during startup and it never goes over about 12.8 volts, which I don't think is enough to damage it. Don't know what happened. Can anyone offer any help?? :(
