Sony EX-51

At Amazon.com you can get the EX-51 for $25.95, that's a pretty good price to get a good pair of decent phones, huh?
I think that I will try these and see how they work, and if I don't like them upgrade to something better.
DO you guys think that this is the right way to go?

That's exactly what I did. The 51s are a good $25 pair of buds with better sound isolation and slightly better sound quality than the stock iPod buds. I've found them adequate for my purposes (I use the pod mostly when walking, running, or on shopping expeditions with my wife) but I keep wrestling with myself about trying the Shure E3s (or new E4s). Don't expect miracles. If you're looking for significantly better sound you might do better just putting the $25 toward a spendier pair.

The Sony earbuds are given way too much credit on this forum, and I found them a bit disappointing because of the unrealistic expectations that had been set. They're better than the stock iPod buds, but then most $25 buds probably are.

They're great in noisy environments, like airplanes; I have a pair just for traveling. I gave up on the concept of low-priced earbuds producing very good sound for day-to-day use, and instead use Sennheiser PX-100 portable headphones. I'll admit that I'm partial to open-air though; I really don't like the way that isolation earbuds make me feel so unaware of what's going on around me.
