new photo ipod question
I just received a new 60GB iPod Photo and it seems to take an awfully long time for the PC to recognize it and start up iTunes (a few minutes). It almost looks like the PC freezes up, but then eventually it does whatever it is doing with the Ipod and everything goes back to normal. I didn't really think it should take so long, most devices are almost instant. Is this normal for iPods?

I was thinking the same! I got mine a few days ago and it takes ages to load iTunes... can't be right - can it?
And importing music... it started out quick (about 5 tunes a sec) but now is dead slow (about 1 tune every 3 secs). I do have a large collection but I didn't think it would make a difference to the speed?

I was basing this off of the time it takes to connect any other USB device - my digital camera, printer, old nomad Zen MP3 player. none of those seem to take any time at all to start up and they don't freeze thing up while they are starting. It is set to launch itunes when i plug it in, maybe that is what is causing the problem. how do I disable that?

how big is your itunes library?(3rd time this has been asked)lol.
you disable it in teh edit/prefrences and i think it is the last tab. i dont have itunes on my work machine here with me.
that should it for ya. jiMMy

sorry :)
My itunes lib is currently about 18GB
# 9 Re: new photo ipod question
thats not that big but mine (when it was set to launch itunes would do what you describe0. i chalked it up to my slower machine and launching 50gig library. but i have disabled that and jut launch itunes manually(comes up slow still, but that is machine speed there) once its up the ipod is detected normally by my machine(still a touch slower than a camera or printer etc.. just the way it is i guess. probably an issue with the computer trying to detect the ipod and launch itunes at the same time makes it wig out.

My machine specs:
Dual PIII 1Ghz
512Mb RAM
Itunes library not existant at the time of problem but it would still take about 1 minute to load.
I had disabled the "launch itunes" thing and still about a minute... Digicam takes about 3 secs
something not right
# 11 Re: new photo ipod question
yeah - something is def not right here too. I uninstalled itunes completely and it still is taking a few minutes before the computer will respond again.
# 12 Re: new photo ipod question
After a bit more experimentation I have found the problem NOT to be with iTunes but rather with the iPod connecting.
If iTunes is running when I connect the pod then iTunes seems to freeze for about a minute while the pod is detected and then unfreeze.
If iTunes is not running when I connect the pod then the PC seems to freeze for about a minute and then unfreeze.
Seems very odd - anyone else have this problem?
I am using USB1.1 on WinXP-SP1. iPod Photo 60Gb version 1.1
Cheers

I removed anyhting to do with itunes/ipod from HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run\ in the registry and now it seems to start up a lot faster. There is still a bit of a hang, but its only for like 30 sec or so.
