iPodMods vs. iPodMechanic

I've seen several references to the companies iPodMods and iPodMechanic, but I haven't seen a post that anyone has actually used either of them and been satisfied.

I have an iPod 4th gen 40GB with a busted LCD. Both companies listed offer to repair the LCD for $160.00 plus shipping. I'm a little concerned about shipping my iPod off to a total stranger.

Has anyone used either company?

I shipped my 3G to ipodmechanic 2 weeks ago for LCD replacement and so far have had no response to my email (3 days ago) and phone calls (yesterday, today) re status. I thought I saw somewhere on the site that they process repairs in 3-5 days- apparently not.

The site definitely says that they respond to emails on a same-day basis, which also has not been the case for me. I sent an email before shipping off my unit and got an answer 3 days later.

From what I can tell, the company is a 1 man operation, so it is possible that he is out of town or something. Still, it is disconcerting and not very professional to get no response at all.

has anyone else had experience with ipodmechanic?

UPDATE: I arrived home after posting this message and found my ipod waiting for me. The screen is fixed and I am much relieved.

Based on the lack of communication, I would probably not use ipodmechanic again. I suspect, though, that most or all independent ipod repair services are 1 man "do what I can after work" operations and may not be any better, but YMMV.

Based on a positive article I read, I shipped my iPod to iPod Mechanic for screen replacement over a month ago. I paid them via PayPal over two weeks ago. The only way to contact them is by email, and I get no response that way. BEWARE!!! Don't make the same mistake I did. Never again will I ship to any company without a phone number and without a live person to answer the phone.

Has anyone used either company?$160 + shipping is an incredibly huge chunk of change for a simple 4th gen LCD repair.

Was it a photo iPod or just a black and white iPod.

I actually had a bad experience with ipodmods. I sent in my ipod because one earbud wasn't working. I sent it in to ipodmods and got myself a new nano. When I plugged the old ear buds into the nano, the same one bud didn't work. Two days later, I called the guys from ipodmods who said I needed a new main board for $95 and a battery for $45. I said forget it. When I got the unrepaired ipod back, it worked perfectly with the new buds. Thanks for trying to screw me ipodmods.

ipodmechanic.com didn't fix my ipod after sending it to them 3x. just a waste of my $150 and my time. do not send your ipods to them for repair.

You didn't bother to read the sticky at the top of the forum?

I ordered a 4th gen photo HD cable from iPodMods.com, and I installede it myself

I was fairly pleased, the shipping and handling was short and the cable worked as I wanted it to, so no complaints from me
