iPod headphone jack getting dirty

It has been one year, and my iPod headphone jack is getting dirty. There are many black dirt in the headphone jack. Anyone have any idea how to clean it, without damaging the iPod?

Cotton buds? Maybe you could stick the end of one into the headphone jack.

A Q-tip would do the trick if you took off a layer or two of cotton off the stick. Also, using cotton from a cotton ball attached to a toothpick of bobby pin might work. If you were dangerous, you might try wrapping something thin around the earbuds jack and try that out.

Good luck.

I've got similar problems. The earphone jack is so dirty that sometimes I find the volume of the left-output varies at random points in time.

However as I peer into the phone jack, I notice that the 'dirt' that is gathering at the very bottom has the appearance of molten metal - could it be a battery leak?

tysoh - is the problem similar to yours?

I'm a little reluctant on using cotton buds in fear that, if it is a battery leak, some of the cotton may become 'stuck' as well...

Please advise on whether I can get it cleaned at home or if i should take it to a nearby Apple shop (if so, is it covered? - i guess a battery leak isn't exactly normal!)

Many thanks, and hope this helps to resolve yours (tysoh) and my problem here.

Sam.

I guess the last post was over a year ago, lol, but I am suprised more people have not had this problem. I was having it and bought DeoxIT ProGold Kit from a Radio Shack, (from ww#.caig.com). You spray it in there and wipe it the best you can. It fixed my no sound from the right side and it sounds better. This should really be regular maintenance for ipods, in my opinion.

If you can get a jack for $25, I would do that. Where do you get it from? Do you have to do the install yourself? It's been a while since I looked into it, but most places charge at least $50 to do anything at all.

Actually a shop ask me 65cnd for the mod and piece, or 30$ for just the installation.

I believe you are talking about the plug on your headphones. We are talking about the receiving jack on the ipod, which is harder to clean. Unless of course you have real skinny finger nails!
