"OK to disconnect"

I'd like to be able to use my iPod while it is still plugged into my computer. Only problem is I am unable to access my music because "OK to disconnect" is staying on my screen.

Is there any way to leave it plugged into my computer and be able to listen to music at the same time directly off it?

Thank you,
Tanya

All you have to do is disconnect the ipod but leave it on the dock.

Disconnect the iPod through iTunes. If you are using USB and use the Windows Hardware Wizard to eject it then you will not be able to charge and listen, only listen. If you use firewire then it is OK to use either iTunes or the Windows Wizard. If you use USB then eject it with iTunes only.

Umm, I think I'm misunderstanding. My iPod is already ejected. Once I connect it says "DO NOT DISCONNECT", I eject it using my little windows icon in the taskbar, and iPod reads "OK to disconnect". Isn't that what you guys are telling me to do?

Yea, I was wondering the same, thing, actually. I run XP and just bought the Firewire+USB wire so I could use my ipod at home and connect to my home theater while in the dock. While I used itunes to eject and stopped the USB support are you saying we need to physically remove the USB cord or something? That defeats the purpose of my having purchased the extra wire :(

By the way, I appreciate the "you dumb arse" comments. Real nice.

Anyway, the OBVIOUS way to do this would be to leave it on the dock and just "eject" the way(s) that were mentioned above. Except for some reason that does not work. It says at "OK to disconnect" and pressing anything on the iPod won't make it possible to steer away from that screen.

Is this how it is for everyone or is it some kind of software problem?

Doing some more searches...this seems to be the general consensus. THere is no good way for 3g ipods.

this happens with 4g ipods too. I think its a windows problem not a ipod problem.

What I do personally, I have a dock, that goes to my charger and to my speaker system, and then I have the usb cord coming from the computer, so when I want to sync I just pull it off the dock and move it to the cord, and sync then put it back on the dock to charge and be my stero system.

Yeah this blows, my Mom bought an Ipod Photo 40gb 4g, I bought a 60gb 4g photo. Hers works perfectly while it;s hooked up to her laptop. It only says "do not disconnect" when she is synching. Mine says it anytime I'm plugged into my desltop. really blows.

You'll have to ignore the dumb arses who obviously didn't understand the question.
To do what you want to do you will have to disable the firewire, or usb, device in your "Device Manager" in control panel. By doing this your computer will continue to power your ipod, but will not try to connect to it.
Obviously you need to re-enable the devices to connect back to itunes.

It's not very elegant solution, and it's not for the computer illiterate, but it works. It's what I do.

It's just aggravating that my mothers works so beutifully plugged in and mine don't you'd figure that they'd all work the same, but it is being plugged into the mother of all terrors, Windows.

with 3Gs, when your iPod is still plugged into your computer , after you eject your iPod, it will say OK to disconnect. But, you have to unplug your iPod to listen to it

yea it sucks but hey its not so bad
