iPod vs. Dell

Please choose the appropriate forum for this topic. Thank you. I was wondering what is the difference between an iPod and a Dell. I have an iPod, but my friends keep saying that a Dell Jukebox is better. Another thing does a Dell 20 gigabyte hold 10,000 songs, and I thought a 20 gigabyte can only hold 5,000.

I still think that an iPod is still better, but whats the differance between an ipod and a Dell.

This is my first time using this so I dont know if my message is good.

Thanks

Welcome. A dell has better battery life. But a 20Gb dell holding 10,000 songs. 20Gb is 20Gb so iPod and Dell are 20GB and i hardly doubt that the Dell Jukebox can hold 10,000 songs.

Oh, okay, so is that the only reason a dell is better than a ipod, is because a its batter life?

In some peoples opinion yes. Other mights like features, if there are any other features, I don't know much about the Dell Jukebox but the iPod is way better to me..

The new-old Dells (from about 3 months ago) only got 10 hours of battery life, the older ones get 15 hours and the new ones (they just re-did) get 12 hours so the battery life is the same. The 10,000 song capacity for the 20GB model comes from ripping music at 64 Kbps in the WMA format. Supposidly this is CD quality but it is not. The new LAME encoder (version 3.96.1) received better scores than WMA at the 128 kbps bitrate. I would not be surprised if the latest Fraunhofer codec received better marks.

In your friend's opinion the Dell is better. The Dell's have slightly better sound quality but they are bundled with MusicMatch Jukebox which, in my opinion, it utter crap. Maybe your friend is a fanboy of WMA, so the Dell would be better. If you want ease of use and a better built mp3 player plus the style factor then the iPod is better suited, as it seems to suite your needs.

I am sure your friend is trying to mess with your mind.

Yeah, there is not much of a difference. Dell supports WMA, iPod supports AAC. The batter life for each unit is the same and they both have the same capacity. The Dell is much cheaper though, their 30GB model goes for $300. If you purchase a Dell PC I think they give you a discount for the player. Overall it is not a bad little player.

I have had a Dell 1G 15gb for about a year, and it has worked flawlessly. However, one day I decided to try iTunes, mainly to manage my huge 23,000+ song music collection and to burn CD's. Well, I fell in love with the program and decided to make it my main music program (I used audioripper before). I clicked on the option to let iTunes organize my music, which completely changed my previous folder system (artist folder/album folder/songs) and I went from about 400 folders to about 4000 folders! There was no way I was going to try to get everything back the way it was, so I decided to commit to iTunes, which for me meant finally getting an Ipod (4G - 40gb). So far iI am very happy with the decision, although I have had problems connecting the iPod to the computer (Windows XP). I find if I reboot, then connect it works fine. So far, here is what I've determined:

Battery Life: Dell DJ - 12-14 hours / Ipod - 8-10 hours
Sound Quality: Dell DJ - 9/10 / Ipod - 7.5/10
Equalizer: Dell DJ - 10/10 (customizable) / Ipod 5/10 (many options, but not customizable)
Interface: Dell DJ 7/10 / Ipod 9/10 (scroll wheel much better than Dell roller)
Extras: Dell DJ 5/10 (no extras) / Ipod 7/10 (has lame games, but has contact and calendar and clock) Extras on Ipod could be better though
Looks: Dell DJ 7/10 / Ipod 10/10
Durability: Dell DJ 9/10 / Ipod 7.5/10 (Dell has more metal and is heavier)
Accessories: Dell DJ 7/10 / Ipod 10/10 (This really sold me - the Itrip and Italk are really cool)

So overall, each unit has it's plusses and minuses, and I really can't say one is better than the other. However, as an owner of both I have to say that now that Itunes is on my computer I will be using the Ipod 80% of the time, and will probably just plug the DJ into my home stereo and use it there. The Ipod will be my on-the-go player.

It looks like strong side of iPod is iTunes and a lot of 3rd parties software.
