Just got an iPod. What do I do now? 2 questions.
I really don't want to screw anything up with this $300 piece of equipment...
.
I'm running Windows XP Home edition and I just downloaded the latest software from the Apple website. The 39MB "iPodsetup.exe" icon is sitting on my desktop right now. I believe this is the latest version of the iPod software. My question is...Can I use this instead of the CD?
And after I install it, I want to store some program files on about 1GB of the iPod for permanent data backup.
I'd like the program files to be seperate from my music. How exactly do I do this?
Any help greatly appreciated!

Yes, this is the "iPod Updater" package, and you will need to install it, run it, and select "Restore" to format your iPod for Windows.
You will also need to install iTunes to actually manage and transfer music to your iPod. I'd recommend downloading the latest version from here (http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/) rather than using the version on your CD.

This is pretty straightforward, since you can just access the iPod as if it were an external hard disk (it will be assigned a drive letter). Just copy files to it as you would normally. There's no really concept of keeping your data "separate" from your music other than simply putting it in a different directory (just like you would on a normal hard drive).
Note that you will need to enable "disk mode" in iTunes (see Edit->Preferences->iPod-General). This will leave your iPod connected after iTunes synchronizes (with this option off, the iPod will automatically disconnect itself after you sync your music, and the drive letter would therefore disappear).

On the apple website it tells you how to use the iPod as a hard disk, I would do this and put the info somewhere else besides the music area. But don't do this until someone more experianced with this situation chimes in.
