The "BEST" FM Transmitter
I was wondering which FM Transmitter is the "BEST" i have the belkin tunecast II its ok its allittle staticy but it works... is there one that is the BEST?
# 1 Re: The "BEST" FM Transmitter
iTrip snice you can change the channel very e-z from your ipod. you dont need wires or bateries. good signal and looks very stylish. I had a berklin one but it got wrekced atfter time due to wear and tear around the headphone jack...

iTrip, easily. The AirPlay was supposed to be great, but the one I got was terrible, and the customer service is bad, too.
# 3 Re: The "BEST" FM Transmitter
...Whereas I had just the opposite experience. The iTrip was annoying to setup, weak in power, and frustrating to change the channels (stop the music, find the iTrip list, find a good frequency, stop it before the next one plays, all while in the car) and the AirPlay is none of those.
However, that's just my wife's setup. I use the TransPod FM, and it beats anything else I've even looked at.
# 4 Re: The "BEST" FM Transmitter
iTrip - wouldn't be without mine. No battery, no cable and very easy to use.
# 5 Re: The "BEST" FM Transmitter
iTrip is by far the best that i have used. but it is still static-y.
# 6 Re: The "BEST" FM Transmitter
Not if you find a good station. Mine's never static-y.
# 7 Re: The "BEST" FM Transmitter
yours is probably staticy because you live in london, which I take has a lot of radio stations, more radio stations equals a more inturrupted signal since there is little frequencies between each station.

iTrip.
# 9 Re: The "BEST" FM Transmitter
iTrip. I tried a cassette adapter but didn't like the cable. I also tried the TuneCast but yet again did not like the cable.
I prefer the iTrip because I don't have to haul around 2 pieces of equipment linked together by a cable. yeah, I know I'm still hauling around 2 pieces of equipment with the iTrip plugged into the iPod but they aren't connected via a cable.

Thumbs down on the airplay, at least to the ones that were sent to me. The CEO indicates a batch were defective and that the whine has now been overcome, and he will replace everyones airplay that has a whine. I guess we will see. For the complete story, see the comments in the review section on this site.
Just received a belkin tuncast II and it works well, maybe even better than the itrip, however, there is no question that the itrip is the most stylish, (but for tunning to another station which often is difficult) and performs well.
# 11 Re: The "BEST" FM Transmitter
I use teh DLO Transpod and it works great. The arm can be changed to fit any configuration and the sound is crystal clear and it has the ability to change from any station from ~88.1 to ~107.7. And if it makes a difference I live in DC where just about every station is being broadcasted on.
# 12 Re: The "BEST" FM Transmitter
iTrip @87.5 for clear, static free tunes, wouldn't be without mine

I thought the iTrip only went as low as 87.9? At least that's as low as I can go with mine (and the stereo in my car for that matter).

You can download the additional stations from the Griffin website, if you do a search on here the topic has been covered recently, with links to the relevant page.
This is of course subject to your radios ability to be tuned down to these stations, I dont know how common this ability is but it certainly works a treat with my Audi TT Quatro.

I use the NewerTechnologies Road Trip. It really depends where you live if you want to find a good fm transmitter. I live in the western suburbs of chicago, and The RoadTrip works great out in the suburbs. Once you get into the city (and this is the problem with any fm transmitter) you get bad static. I like the Roadtrip because you don't have to fiddle with stations or anything to get a clear signal. I previously had the monster wireless icarplay and ended selling it on ebay because I liked this one better. and it's only 15 bucks, I couldn't go wrong.
# 17 Re: The "BEST" FM Transmitter
I have a macally FM transmitter. Got it from buy.com. It came with car lighter and wall transformer plugs, so it works in the house and the car. It is anice product... full tuning range with shortcuts for about 5 preset channels. And.. it charges the ipod while it plays. Sounds great in the house... the only problem is that it will not fit in the cigarette lighter in my VW Golf because the cig lighter is depressed into the shifter console. :o Looks like I need an extension cord.
I think I will be pleased with it after getting an extension cord.
# 18 Re: The "BEST" FM Transmitter
I drive a huge truck in the oilpatch in canada all day long and my new RoadTrip doesn't budge and has better sound than the cassette player in my rig.
Not only that, but when I'm parked on location waiting around (which is quite often) my RoadTrip has a strong enough signal for all the trucks within about 200 feet(we tested it for fun)
If this thing can handle my mini when I'm crashing down some fresh cut road in the middle of the wilderness, I'm sure it can handle one in some cushy SUV that sees the car wash a million times more than anything even resembling gravel.
And for the people who think it's ugly, well design your own I guess.
Unless I wreck this one, it will be the last one I buy.
# 19 Re: The "BEST" FM Transmitter
I use the Belkin TuneCast (note: no II there). The price was right and it works good. I hear (well, see) everyone talking about iTrip, but if you go to the apple site and read the reviews most seemto hate iTrip. It is very not good to tell people what will work for them. In my area, the lower end of the dial is almost empty, making it perfect for these machines. And come on, the cord on the tune cast is about 3 inches. Get over it. Just because it's got the little "i" don't make it great.

What the heck?
Those of us that use the iTrip and have had it work very well for us have just as much right to recommend the iTrip as people like you that use another product. Everyone's going to have different experiences with an FM transmitter based on the abundance and quality of the signals in their region.
And let it be known that user reviews are not the most accurate representation of how good a product is. As with any product the few people that have a bad experience with a product are much more likely to write up a review than the many people that are satisfied with their purchase.
(btw, if you stiill want to use Apple's site and it's reviews as an example, the tunecast recieved 2 stars on the Apple Store's customer rating section as opposed to the iTrip's 3 stars, and has had just as many, if not more negative reviews written up on it.)
So if you still don't believe there are plenty of us that are more than satisfied with our tuner that's "got the little i" then do as you said and get over it.
# 21 Re: The "BEST" FM Transmitter
Screw the itrip, FM mod or even tape deck use.
Go out and research on getting it connected to the radio directly. Its a little work...
BUT IT SOUNDS FAN-FREGGIN-TASTIC. I hooked up my VW in 20 minutes.
I dont think they will ever come out with a good quality fm transmitter. Unless they can up the power to overrid some of the newer antenna technology on newer cars.
Or, get a set of good portable speakers to use in the car.
Once again, forget the fm transmitter option. they are no good.

I apologize,
What I meant was, What works for some won't work for others. In some places, with lots of radio stations, maybe iTrip doesn't work so much. Or if you travel a lot, stations might change or come in and go out and cause problems for the iTrip. I have never used the product, but from what I have researched, there seems to be as many problems as benefits. I don't really care who recommends what. What bothers me is the "All you have to do..." attitude I see from some people who won't listen to others when they say something doesn't work for them. Or if they like something other than usual. If your iTrip works, great. I read the reviews, checked the specs, compared comsumer reports, then went to Wal-mart and bought what I could afford. I wanted something to work with my laptop and CD player. I got what I wanted with what I had to spend. I mean c'mon, after spending almost $300 on an iPod, I wanted to economize.

The iTrip has worked fine for me, i like it better than the monster one. Plus there's no wiring to get tangled up in you shifter, its totally cordless. Very close to Cd sound for me, the antenna on my car is built into the windshield so i usually keep it on the dash. The closer you are to the anttena the better the sound.
# 24 Re: The "BEST" FM Transmitter
i bought the belkin fm transmitor thats not for the ipod and it blows...i think ill return it and save up another 20 and get the one u plug into ur cig lighter...it charges and playes music clearly
# 25 Re: The "BEST" FM Transmitter
I still don't understand why this is in the "Hacks and Mods" portion of the forum.
# 26 Re: The "BEST" FM Transmitter
I haven't used the airplay or the itrip. but i have used the Norwood micro. It sucks.. horrible transmission of the signal, and comes in reallly low when you can get it to come in. and the cable for it is very annoying. It also kept cutting out on me every 2 mins. never figured out why. I guess it depends on where your antenea is on ur car.

I completely agree. I hooked mine up to the back of my stereo in my VW jetta and it is perfect!!!!!!!!!

I'm not spending $150 for a new head unit since my current one doesn't have any inputs.
# 29 Re: The "BEST" FM Transmitter
so then don't.. but it is the best sound.. although the fmtransmitter that i had i gave to my brother and it seems to work really well in his truck.. so <shrugs>... guess it depends on the car?

# 30 Re: The "BEST" FM Transmitter
I've had my iTrip for about a week now and it works perfectly. In my room I can have it work with no distortion from about 8 ft away, then there is the occasional crackle between 8ft and 12ft. It also works perfectly in my mum's, my dad's and my brother's cars. It has made my iPod my main stereo system in my room (However I'm looking to buy some proper speakers to have great sound quality and a remote control etc.)

Just use what you want. My Belkin worked when I hooked it to the stereo which was hooked to the TV. I could here King Of The Hill in the Kitchen without waking up my 3-year-old in the living room.

# 32 Re: The "BEST" FM Transmitter
I have the Monster iCarPlay Wireless - FM Transmitter. It works flawlessly and will even transmit right over an existing radio station with little static. It also doubles as a car charger.
Here's a link to it:
Monster iCarPlay (http://www.monstercable.com/productpage.asp?pin=2084)
# 33 Re: The "BEST" FM Transmitter
iTrip sucks IMO because they have such a kludgey scheme for setting channels.
You actually have to put a bunch of little audio files on your iPod...no thanks.
I expected to just plug in and go. What a ridiculous scheme.
# 34 Re: The "BEST" FM Transmitter
I had the Belkin tunecast II and it got scratchy after just a couple months of use (I even opened it up to see if it needed to be re-soldered, but it must be in the wire cause I found no faults inside). It also doesn't charge, which sucks when You've got a long drive going. Plus if you use the plug to run the transmiter, you can't plug in a charger for your iPod as well. It uses the headphone jack, which means you have to adjust the volume on the iPod and your stereo. There are three buttons, which means you have to look at it when adjusting (not cool when driving). It resets to the lowest station when ignition is switched off (requiring you to retune the transmitter along with turn on your iPod). The display, while it seems cool and easy to read, is hard to read (no contrast control). The only plus, it uses the headphone style plug so you can use it with other accesories (DVD players, cd players, etc...).
I now use the Monster Cable iCarPlay. It works really well (even on top of other stations). Uses the dock connector, so it's using the line-out ability in the dock-connector, meaning you don't have to worry about the iPod's volume level. It charges (major plus in my book!). Easy, one button, station picking. It looks cool (red lights...oooOOooo). What more could you want? Well it turns the iPod on when you turn the car on (if your power outlet is ignition switched) and pauses it when you turn the car off! Very cool. Plus, Monster is known for good quality products and has been around for a long time (no fly-by-night company worries after you've had your product for a few months and it breaks). The only negative part is the price ($60-70 IIRC). But it is worth it, in my opinion.

# 35 Re: The "BEST" FM Transmitter
Hey there, gang. I just got my iPod approximately 2 months ago and I'm totally loving it. Now,I'm looking to possibly buy an FM transmitter. Only thing is thatI keep hearing that both the iTrip and Airplay are practically useless in urban areas, particularly cites like New York City,Chicago,Los Angeles,LondonParis, etc. due to there being so many microwave signals and skyscrapers. Since I live in Chicago and travel to NYC for work, this is sort of a concern. I was just wondering if anyone who had a FM radio for thier iPod,how the reception was and what city they're in.
Thanks
# 36 Re: The "BEST" FM Transmitter
i got a generic one called "link it" from k-mart for 5 bucks. I figured it would be rubbish for the price, but it seemed worth giving a shot. It has a little cable and it needs 2 AAA batteries, but it works AMAZINGLY. It has a switch with 4 channels and it does a great job of overriding channels that already have a station on them. I live in an area with TONS of radio stations, especially college stations low on the dial and I haven't had any static at all.
# 37 Re: The "BEST" FM Transmitter
If you live in the boonies, then the iTrip might be fine. I live 60 miles east of Los Angeles. The iTrip has static on every single frequency (tested with 3 different iTrips). In LA or in OC, it's even worse. The power on the iTrip really is not sufficient. :(

# 38 Re: The "BEST" FM Transmitter
I'm a total newbie, but when DH bought my iPod, he got me the iTrip at the same time. I LOVE it. We tuned the radio into 87.9 in the greater Toronto area and it was as smooth as butter all the way to North Bay. It's a bit finicky in my car, but I need a new antenna for my car; I'm hoping it'll be better after that. Very neat gadget.
# 39 Re: The "BEST" FM Transmitter
iTrip...but get the extra stations from their website to
