PAinted my pod

Please choose the appropriate forum for this topic. Thank you. Please choose the appropriate forum for this topic. Thank you. I already posted this awhile ago but I thought I'd put here as well. I simply painted the front black, placed some water decals on it, then clear coted the crap out of it. It could have been down a little better, but I'm happy with it.

That's sick, dude. The decal on the wheel is a little crooked, but other than that, amazing job.

do you have a link to the original thread?

does it have a step-by-step on the painting process?

i might just consider borrowing your idea ;)

There's really not much of a process. Just paint a base coat in whatever color you would like. I then bought some printable decal paper from a craft store and printed the graphics on it and cut them out. The trick is to spray the decals with some clear coat and let them dry, otherwise when you put them in water to transfer them onto the ipod, the ink will run. After the decals were on the ipod, I just clear coated over them with several coats. If you have the time and will, i would suggest airbrushing the body with some quality paint to get a nice finish. Good luck!

how about spray painting the ipod? anyone done that before? i would think that would work too since the front is just plastic. also, does painting my ipod eliminates me from the apple warranty??

Does it reduce the sensitivity of the iPod scroll wheel at all?

I was just about to ask the exact same thing... Does it?
DBleek at 2007-11-15 15:06:31 >
# 11 Re: PAinted my pod
I doubt it does because some of the accessories that cover the wheel do not affect the sensitivity at all.

can i get a spray paint and spray paint my 3G ipod?
O by the way is it alrigt if i go over the buttons...?

# 14 Re: PAinted my pod
I would be very careful with spray paint. Because of the nature of spray paint, it is far more likely slip between some buttons and get inside the pod, I would cover the buttons with plastic or tape before spray painting.

What do mean by slipping between the buttons? I used spray paint, but was sure to remove the face before painting (although i assume one would not need to do this if careful enough) At least for the 3rd gen, the top is one solid piece of plastic

I would definitely give my iPod up in a heartbeat for that one. It's so awesome. I never would think of painting my iPod myself since I would mess it up, but that just looks amazing. Especially with the Alkaline Trio theme.

thanks to everyone for the comments. yes I may have thrown it together with a can of spray paint and some printed decals, but i figured what the hell, when it starts looking like ### or i get bored of it, I can just throw the original face back on and go back to boring old white. Ideally, if I were to do it again, I would look into having the graphics laser cut and have somone professionally airbrush it.

I think I'm going to do something similar to mine. I want it painted black. Only I think I'm gonna try wet sanding it between coats so its really smooth before the clear coat.

By the way, I like the look. I'm not a fan of Alkaline Trio but it looks pretty badass. Did you paint (black) over the buttons and then put the stickers on or did you just put the stickers on?

# 42 Re: PAinted my pod
not done aswell as it could have been done.

painting tips spray 30cm from the object, make sure the object is clean as a whislte before hand, be patient, wait until every coat dries completley before u do another, clear coat if it feels like the paint will come off.

Just like to say, looks awesome, i think definately an airbrush job would look better, but it still is totally unique and a pat on the back to u. jsut to ask, what u mean by the original face? u got two different ones? if so whered u get a replacement? coz im tempted to have mine painted. thnx for any answers.

# 46 Re: PAinted my pod
I don't know about Best Buy, but Apple says that giving the back a brushed look doesn't void the warranty, so I'd assume that painting it doesn't.

[EDIT]Mulv, you can search eBay and find a bunch of parts, fronts, backs, everything. Mostly 3G, but there's 4G on there too.

# 48 Re: PAinted my pod
Totally awesome, even if I weren't a fan of the design I would still think it kicks butt just because it's an expression of yourself/favorite band! I've been getting really fed up by the fact that all of the iPod covers/tatoos/whatever are for the click wheel, because I have one that has the buttons above the touch wheel. So I'm thinking I might just have to paint mine too ^.^ What kind of paint would you suggest? Also, this may sound totally stupid, but how do you take the front off? Mine doesn't look like it has a release, do you just stick something in it and pry it apart or something? *scary*

# 52 Re: PAinted my pod
To the last few posts. It works fine still, I got the face/front cover from someone on ebay, and I just used Testors model spray paint but would suggest Kyrlon fusion as I just painted my Playstation 2 with it and it leaves a nice durable finish. Good luck.
