ipod Video software Possible to write?
I was just wondering if it was possible to write a program in the ipods code, like a game on the ipod and allow it to play videos. I read on the forum that you need hardware upgrades but i dont quite understand that. Its an LCD it can play anything. And if it can run games why cant u run a "Video Player" under the games list. haha
PS: I was also thinking 1 more thing, i saw a site where someone put linux on an ipod, if you did that you could run a linux video player and play videos.

Yes, wtih Linux for iPod you could. However, they haven't got a 4th Gen iPod to test it on I don't think. So they can't make one for the new iPod.
If Apple don't release a video update soon, I will be purchasing the DV-pod, because I'm getting fed up with Apple screwing over customers. The iPod is not limited by hardware, don't let anyone tell you otherwise. The normal 4th Gen processor can cope with it, Apple chose not to include it

where can i find more information on this dv-pod? i tired searching the forum and did a google search but nothing came up.

Possible? Perhaps.
Are we likely to ever see a "hack" for the iPod which allows for video-playback...highly doubtful.

i think he means a mp4 player there is no such thing as a dv-pod he means a video player

Its a rip off of the iPod, called the DVX-Pod... http://www.tightaudiosystems.com/dvg_store.htm#position Second one down. But I've looked into it further and it only has 30gb hard drive, not enough for me!
Looks like I have to stay with Apple for now then. But no, unless a Linux fiend comes out with an update, it won't do it...Apple could feel kind enough to release an update, but I doubt they are that nice!

heres my theory on the ipod video.
apple wants to release one, but they cant. the reason being you cant download movies on itunes, so your either stealing them off limewire or kazza or somehow you are saving the dvd to your computer.. which i dont know how to do or even if its possible because of copyright protection

i want it for music videos not like full 2 hour movies

Will we ever see a hack? Maybe so, though I think you will still be needing a TV to utilize it. If you are capable of understanding things like this (http://www.ipodlinux.org/index.php/Documentation#Technical_Details) then you can pretty clearly see that the iPod has some pretty powerful internals that are entirely unchallenged by MP3 playback. The most troubling problem with video IMO would be hard disk access. Seeing as the ipod has a relatively small amount of RAM, and videos (even short ones) take up a pretty big amount of space, the ipod would almost have to continually be accessing its hard drive. It's hard to say if the ipod would be capable of real time playback of videos at the same resolution of the iPod's LCD (ignoring sound for the moment).
The other problem is that the ipod doesnt have a sufficient MMU to use a comparably standard distro of linux. So it has to use a special brand called uClinux which doesn't need a MMU at all. The limitations of uClinux will ultimately limit what the developers can do with iPod Linux. Though, just to prove the ipod is indeed capable of moving image output, check out this video. Here (http://booc.coob.org/cubedemo.avi)
That cube is controlled by the user. As well, it should be noted that the linux kernel does boot on the 4g iPod's, but some key features don't work yet, like audio output.

I can tell by reading this that you pirate software, music and movies becuase this is what you think about. What if i made a video on Imovie and wanted to watch it? would this be copyright infringment?

so what are you going to arrest him? why dont you make a post to contribute to the thread?
