Just gimme a little convincing :)

hi all. Sorry I've been away so long. I was wondering, could I get some healthy encouragment from the mac a holics here? At few weeks ago, I placed an order for my ibook 12". It has all the tricks on it, 80GB HDD, 1.25GB RAM, Bluetooth. You know the drill (where would I be without edu discounts?). Well, yesterday, my mate placed an order for his Dell Inspiron 9200 (see here linky (http://www1.ca.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/inspn_9200?c=ca&cs=CADHS1&l=en&s=dhs)
to get what I mean). He pretty much got it similarily tricked out, only with 1GB ram, and a 2GHZ Cpu. I havent really had my first mac experience yet, and am thus a little doubtful about leaving the windows world still, especially after looking at this. Could anyone just gimme a little "help me" pick me up, to console me troubled mind?

Hey nice to see ya over here Eltha!

Well, frankly, The Dell 9200, is not a laptop, its a mammoth.

We he got a laptop for that kind of money... I have no idea. But for the 2-3 grand he spent on it he could have gotten a much nicer desktop computer for the same price.

you sir made a good choice. :D Unless you honestly game like a madman, you made a good purchase decision, especially considering you won't have to setup firewalls, anti-virus, etc. etc.

well, I've been a mac user all my life and can tell you from experiance that mac OS X is the greatest OS ever, just the way everything works on it. How seemlessly all the programs can work together. You get all those cool iLife apps, Garageband, iPhoto, iMovie etc. and they all work together so well. I don't think for a second that you'll be disappointed with your purchase, maybe your friend will end up wanting a mac after he sees yours ;) I'd keep what you're getting, pretty nice set up for a first time mac user. Congrats!!!

i've seen that dell before..; its huge... though when i went to the apple store i saw an ibook and it looked awsome! (i have an powerbook) I feel you made a really nice choice.. if you are just switching to mac now.. you might wanna get another 2 button mouse cause all the mac mouses are one button.. anyways osx is much like windows and can run basically the same programs as well but osx has the awsome ilife! plus ipod + ibook = perfect combo.

I really can't understand people who spend 2-3 grand on a laptop monster when you can get a beautiful iMac G5 or *touchwood a decently-designed PC for that price.

Anyway, you made a wonderful wonderful decision with the iBook G4. I've been using mine for more than 9 weeks now, and it's SPECTACULAR. You get iLife as mentioned earlier and graphics will never be the same for you. And of course, the OS X rarely (I wouldn't say never) crashes. The only downside is gaming but I doubt you game that much.

And the white finishing of the iBook is also more pleasant to the eye as to the monster's design, so yeah, right choice my friend.

And you're hearing this from a 1.07GHZ, 256MB RAM, 40GB iBook user. I'm jealous...

Stay with the iBook for sure. Great computer for wireless internet, portability, and of course the iPod. You won't regret your purchase because it is so fun to use.

Lots of my friends don't like Mac's because they don't have the start menu. This doesn't make since to me because Mac's have the dock(which is faster than the start menu) and they have the Hard Drive icon which has the same function as a start button. Anyone know why people like the start button so much?

I think jpod that people like it so much cuss it's always been there, when they see a computer that doesn't have it they think there's something wrong with it. I use to get this all the time from my grandpa, everytime he'd see my powerbook he'd ask where the start button was LOL pretty annoying

Dave I thought you told me you got a 30GB HDD... Did you change your order and get a larger one or are you including the Ext. HDD...? Also has it arrived yet, check the shipping number again and track it..

macs still dont fully support a lot of the freeware online, major software titles come in mac but usually its pc only. Its a fact, even if you emulate windows on there, it'll limit performance. But if you like surfing on the net and a lot of non-techy stuff, the mac is a nice, albiet an overpriced and tacky, choice.

will you're just mean, the macs work fine with "techy" things they're not over-priced or tacky either IMO, I love the look of all things mac. I find if a program doesn't work for mine I don't need it anyway, so it's not a big problem

there is a ton of Mac freeware out there, for virtually anything you need to do. I have 82 items in my Applications folder, 95% of which are freeware that serve some specific purpose. And unlike on a PC, it's perfectly safe to have applications you don't use regularly sitting in your hard drive.

what does this mean? All major software titles are available in OS X-native versions, many of which are superior to their PC counterparts (Office 2004, for example)

Well, yeah, because it's not a Windows computer.

Tacky? How, exactly? Macs are the most elegant computers available.

Dude, what was that? ;D

If you look at the Free Software Foundations, GNU software library, there are more than 37, 000 titles available for Macintosh there. And I do C++ on my Mac, and I'm learning stuff like UNIX programming on my Mac and it's alright even though commandline hurts.

The Mac being UNIX-based is much more techy than anything Windoze can offer.

EDIT!
hehe... One of the most enjoyable things about Mac OS X is its incredible speech recognition software. I can set up my iBook to do 90% of my work without touching the thing! PM me for some more details, as I don't feel like typing anymore. ;)
ANOTHER EDIT!
People who own Macs have impeccable spelling... Most 14-year-olds spell like the dude who called Macs "tacky". Anyway... Shutting up...

Don't argue with Will1087 Crazy, to roughly quote a sig some here has "Never argue with an idiot, they'll only drag you down to their level and beat you with experience" or some such. It applies in his case. And don't forget that biggest "non-techy" thing that macs can do, UNIX.

# 15 Re: Just gimme a little convincing :)
Here's something I wrote to jpod999 when he asked about my iBook doing stuff for me:
Hey. What I was referring to is the more annoying, mundane task of navigation, opening and closing of windows, ect, ect... I do this using the Speech commands.
A basic tutorial:
To turn on Speech commands, go to your System Preferences, and under the "System" section is a little microphone. Use the radio buttons to turn speakable items on. There are also things it can do, like speak the text under your mouse, read announcements to you and other stuff like that. You might also want to check "Turn on Apple Speakable Items at login". Next, go to the listening tab and set your listening on/off key. This is extremely important, as my iBook has a habit of confusing the mouse button click with the quit command. You can also set a pre-command word. This makes me feel like I'm Captain Kirk when I have it on... "Computer... Open Safari". Hehe.. Next, set the microphones volume so that it is always in the low greens. This makes it easier for the iBook to register commands when there is ambient noise. There is also a speakable items checkbox list to pick which apps to use speakable items in.
Quit System Preferences.
The most important command ever:"Define keyboard commands". This brings up a window where you type a command you use commonly (such as command + h), and set a voice command. So, I made command + h, "Hide App". I also did this with things like command + p, command + s... You get the idea.
To make it possible to navigate to folders and stuff, highlight the items you want speakable (that means you just say thier filename, and WALA! Great fun) and say, "Make this speakable". I have my games folder like this, my apps folder, my music folder, and tons of other stuff. It also makes working with my iBook much more fun.
(end of message)

Another great thing Macs can do is execute timed Applescripts. These little candies are extremely easy to write, and there are a couple of really good books on Applescripting. I've set up one that just opens all my web apps (Mail, Sherlock and Safari) and goes to a certain page, checks my mail and checks the Apple stock. Apple stock has been a recent obsession of mine... Now if I had the money to get some.

I replaced my old PC with the iBook a few years ago and haven't looked back. I get on fine with the 500Mhz G3 - it surfs, does email and, after the HD upgrade, lets me edit DV footage and make DVDs pretty well. OSX Panther + new HD + Airport card was like getting a new machine :). Usually I'm running Mail, Safari, iTunes, Stickies, and a number of finder windows... all flawlessly. Also, it's a more or less virus/spyware/adware free environment. Enjoy!

No, not at all. More is not always better. There is plenty of Mac shareware/Freeware out there, just not as many as in the PC world. Having used both Macs and PCs, I have discovered that Mac shareware tends to be of a better quality than a lot of the "crapware" out there in the PC world. How many Apps do I need to join files? How many Apps do I need to look at pictures? How many Apps do need to keep Spyware off my computer? (on a Mac NONE).

You seem to have the idea that there are none or very few. You are wrong, plain and simple.

3.22
Apple iMac G5 (1.8GHz PowerPC G5, 512MB DDR SDRAM 400MHz)
8.52
Note: * Velocity Micro ProMagix PCX CPU and graphics card are overclocked.

CNET Labs uses Adobe Photoshop to evaluate a Mac's performance as an integrated whole--the CPU, the memory, the hard disk, and the graphics card. We run an automated suite of operations that simultaneously stresses a variety of the machine's subsystems and simulates a real-world Web-production work flow. The suite includes launching the application; converting between color spaces and bit depths; applying a variety of filters; working with layers, selection areas, and alpha channels; and resizing and compressing images. We time how long it takes to run the suite on 15 files that range from 1.8MB to 49.2MB, in 8- and 16-bit color.

the velocity micro (a pc) soundly beat a DUAL g5 w/ 2 gigs of ram in photoshop. seeing as how macs are self touted creative systems, isnt it a bit dissapointing?

seeign as how the amd 64 bit soundly beats the p4, i think if the velocity had a amd fx-51, it would be even worse for apple.

I'd like to know why you feel so strongly about not getting Macs and only using PCs, when in the "iPod Popularity" thread you seem to say: "Who cares what they spend their money on, it's their money"... It's our money, and we feel that Macs are better machines...

By your logic then, we should not be using iPods, they are inferior because they don't have the best battery life, not very much codec support, don't sound the best when compared to other DAPs, don't have an FM Radio... I suppose we should all buy iRiver iHP's now, they have the best specs!!

How does a Mac not fulfill it's main purpose? It's a computer, which many people comfortably can use in their lives.. Oh right, because it doesn't have a P4 Velocity 4.0 GHz processor that can run a Nuclear Station and render an image in 2.34543345 minutes, I suppose it doesn't fulfill it's purpose...

Hehe... Just can't help but comment on your number- you did it with your left hand, right? :p Annyyyywaaaayyy...

Even if at times it is a little slower, the Mac can do ANYTHING a Windows can do. And it's easier to buy software, as there is less out there, and a higher percentage is extremely well-made. One big advantae Mac users have over Windows users is the Toolbar. Windows toolbars are application-reliant, making them a pain. So, if you have say, an Appleworks document open, but it is in the dock, you can save it without bringing it up. This also means if you misclick and hit the close button, the application is still open, and you don't have to re-load it.
