Copying to hard drive.... what am I doing wrong?

Hey everyone,
When I got my 4G 20GB iPod in August, I installed EphPod instead of iTunes since I'm on Windows 98SE. At the time, it worked fine, but the one problem was that it didn't edit the composer tag, which I need for my large classical collection. So I looked into other programs and have been using several since then, but none could copy to the hard drive, which until I got a larger hard drive last week was unnecesary anyway. So now I want to copy a bunch of stuff that's not backed up, but suddenly EphPod won't let me, so I installed Winamp. Good program, but won't copy to my hard drive either, nor does it edit the composer tag! I just get a failure for every song on my iPod (0% done, 2646 failures...?) So I'm using Winamp as a media library, and I'd like to use EphPod as my main iPod tool, but I have this one problem that I cannot solve. I've searched and posted around, but nothing works. I reinstalled EphPod today -- still the same. I'm wondering if I should delete the iPod_Control folder from the iPod -- maybe that's the problem. Would EphPod just recreate it when I connect the iPod? I wouldn't lose the music, I copied it to the HD by viewing the iPod as a disk, but all the files are disorganized and scattered through the directories (F00-F49). I'd just like to have it all organized in a Genre/Artist/Album structure. Ok this is getting much longer than it needs to be...

Thanks for the help,
-Ari

Why don't you just copy the files that are in the F## directories to the hard drive and organize them once they're there. You don't want to screw up the file system on the iPod. Otherwise you'll have to restore the iPod which will erase everything. There's a method to Apple's madness when it comes to the F## directories

There definitely is a method to it, but I haven't exactly cracked the code, or maybe I'm just stupid. I've got over 2,600 songs scattered through the directories, and my computer isn't too fast. That would take a lot of time, and honestly I don't have much to spare right now. There has to be some way to fix my Ephpod problem...

Ahhh!

I reformatted my iPod yesterday and I'm still having the same problem. It's really not that urgent -- I have it all backed up, but like I said, the 3000 songs are scattered throughout the F## directories. The thing is, I'm a neat freak and I'd like to have my music organized so I can always find it if I want to burn a CD or whatever. Apparently the problem is with my computer, but I just can't figure it out. Any more ideas?

Thanks,
Ari
