I think you'd want the Mini ;)
Besides, you can't hook up the Shuffle everywhere, unless you lug a laptop around with you. And if you lug one around with you all the time, why carry an MP3 player? ;)

I think that I would hate to hear a song I was fairly unfamiliar with come over my screenless player and have to note the time of it being played and then SYNC THE PLAYER just to find out what it was.
Of course, at last check, I had 50GB of music, and lots of it is new stuff recommended by friends, so there's no way I'm familiar with most of it.
If you're planning on spending $150 on a 1GB shuffle, I'd spend the $250 on a mini.

if this is your primary MP3 i would strongly recommend the mini or the 4G 20 gb iPod. i am getting a shuffle to act as my workout MP3 player and for that it is perfect, but i would be lost at other times without being able to access my whole music collection and have an LCD to mark songs with ratings etc.

Yeah get the mini. Or the Creative Zen Micro (if you don't care about brand). I got mine so I can put my HDD player away when I workout.

Here's my thought, and I'm sure it has been expressed by many others, but why not again right?
For the average consumer who has not gotten onto the iPod wagon yet, the iPod shuffle might be a good primary player. It will allow them to listen to their music away form the computer, and it's small and compact, so they can take it with them.
For me, I wouldn't ever make the shuffle my only iPod (or MP3 player to be PC I guess). There are many times when I like to choose specifically what I'm listening to. I might not know what I want to listen to on the car ride home when I'm syncing my iPod in the morning. With the shuffle, this could cause a problem. With the mini, I can just choose.
I purchased an iPod shuffle for several reasons. The first is because I'm an Apple freak, and I like their gadgets, the second was because I had Christmas money left over and figured it'd be a good use, but the third reason was the most important. When I'm working out, the iPod mini that I have can be somewhat of a drag to use. It's a little bigger and heavier. I just want something simple, that I can start and let run. I feel with the shuffle, I can be more rough. With the mini I feel more inclined to keep it safe.
Just my thoughts.

Besides the fact that I needed a "workout iPod", the fact that it doubles as a USB drive helped my decision.
# 7 Re: Is the shuffle worth it
Or buy the 3G 15GB Ipod from apple.com for 189 bucks.
# 8 Re: Is the shuffle worth it
I've got one question and someone please email me back if it is true. Has the ipod shuffle's algorithm changed any from the 'original' ipods? If the algorithm in fact hasn't changed the randomness or 'shuffle' wont be much. Maybe this is only something i've noticed but the shuffle on my 3G 40gig seems to play the same 600 songs out of 5000. Maybe it's just me. When someone gets a shuffle and notices a pattern instead of 100% random let me know.

Is there such thing as 100% random though?

Life is random, Aaron.
Steve says so!
# 11 Re: Is the shuffle worth it
There's no such think as 100% random, when it comes to computer generated, as far as I know. The pattern could be so vast, that it would appear random, but I don't think it actually can be random.

I don't think you're the only one who's noticed this. I've heard other complaints.

Maybe your iPod hates you? ( http://blogcritics.org/archives/2004/09/01/224917.php)

I've got a 40 gb 3G iPod, and am thinking about getting 4 Shuffles; a 1 Gb for myself, and 2 212s for my nieces and 1 512 for my girlfriend. The reason I would end up getting a shuffle for myself is that I just do not want to lug around the mugbait that the iPod has become (I'm not saying that the Shuffle is any less desirable, but read on). If I can hang the shuffle around my neck in the summertime, it's perfect for me.
At the moment, I'm mainly using my iPod at home, hooked up to my stereo.
That having been said, I do not use the iPod's shuffle play and never have. I listen to entire albums and OTR and that's probably how I'll continue to use the Shuffle as well. Since I do not own a USB drive, I can easily justify buying a shuffle to use as one, and get an mp3 player in the process.
In Canada, at least in the city I live, the 1 gb Shuffle is about $50 Cdn more than a plain USB drive.

if you were to do alot of exersizing it would be worth it becuase i would rather carry around a small 100$ player and not worry about it as much than carry around my 400$ 40Gb ipod that is alot bigger...
So if you run alot its worth it or if you just dont care about carrying less songs

iPod shuffle comes in 2 sizes: 512MB and 1024MB

I didn't think so. Personally I think it is more worth $50, but that is my opinion.

Why worth only $50?

Yah, I know that it comes in 2 sizes. The 212 was an error. Love shuffle? No. I won't. I've had my iPod since Nov/03, and a Rio Riot prior to that. Going back to Jan/01, some generic MP3CD player, and stretching back to the dawn of time a portable turntable. I listen to albums in their entirety and OTR. I haven't listened to radio since I got broadband in March/99.
