24 hours with the shuffle
Hey all, I just wrote what turned out to be a really, really long review of my day with the new shuffle and being the clutz that I am in the morning bumped my mouse and in doing so I clicked it and it closed the window. After writing the review, some aspects stood out more than others and I will give you those rather the extended version just to save us all some time. So without further ado, my thoughts after a full day with the shuffle. (PS, for the record I also have a 3G)
-Insanely small. I don't care how many pictures you see or how many descriptions you read about the size of this thing, you will not believe how small it is until you see it in person and physically hold one.
-Earbuds. I am giving Apple a TON of respect on this. They finally included a slider on the part where it splits to avoid tangling. I have other brands of earbuds that have this simple, yet effective device, and oh boy does it work wonders. A friend of mine had her earbuds replaced by Apple for her 4G and she got this very type. It's about time these became standard. Well done.
-Sound. Wow. I would not have expected the sound coming from this device to be so good. Maybe I had low expectations and my reaction is off base as a result, but I was blown away at how crisp it sounded and the amount of bass that came out. And that's not to mention how loud it gets; I don't recommend testing it out for yourself.
LED communication. Still not too sure about this. It takes a bit of getting used to interpreting orange and green blinks, but it is manageable. The point of the device is to play music, plain and simple so given that, I think this is an effective method. Plus, rarely will you ever have to look at it while using it which leads me to my next section...
Controls. Simple, effective, no complaints. I like being able to control it while it is in my pocket without having to "dodge" buttons for fear of accidently brushing them on my way to my goal. I am sure all the other 3G owners out there know what I am talking about. While there is a hold feature (holding down the play/pause button for a few seconds) I have yet to use it.
iTunes integration. If I had to grade this, I would give it an A-. It was a little slow to upload songs if I dragged and droppped them in and the lack of firewire is a bit disappointing, but everything else is great. I LOVE having the option to leave the shuffle icon in my playlists to allow me to put songs in whenver I choose. If something comes up that I like I just put it in and then next time I connect the shuffle, voila. Solid.
Accessories. F minus minus. In my opinion, included earbuds should not be considered accessories; they are needed to use the device. Headphones that you buy separately are accessories because they are upgrades or another style, etc. Sorry, I digress. The only other accessory included is a piece of string with a USB cap attatched to allow one to wear the shuffle as a necklace. I don't know about you, but if I ever saw someone walking down the street wearing one like that, I would, borrowing a line from Dane Cook, "punch him in the face." Believe me, that person would thank me later on. It is just a horrible, horrible idea and to be honest, when I saw it in person I felt like I was the one punched in the face and then was laughed at by Apple. They give you a piece of string, and then in the instruction booklet say, "other [accessories] are available for purchase." While I know that including say, an armband, would raise the price beyond the psychological $100 barrier for most people, don't give us a piece of string. Or even don't include anything extra and just give us the player and earbuds. Just don't give me a piece of string and tell me I can be fashionable. I would rather put in my pocket if I walk down the street because it is so small.
Ok, I am starting to ramble on again. I hope this was informative for some people looking to get one. Despite my disappointment for the string, this is a solid digital music player. In fact, I should not let something like that ruin the experience for me so I am going to throw it away and pretend it never existed. Done. I am thrilled to be one of the first people to own a shuffle and to be able to share my experience with all of you. It is a wonderful product that allows new users to experience the world of digital music that Apple has created and for current iPod owners to compliment their current models with a more portable, less breakable, yet just as effective tool to play the soundtrack of our daily lives.

Good post....
It's made me even more impatient waiting for mine to arrive now though

Thanks for that review. And i have to agree with you on the included accessories Apple provides. It really is quite pathetic. I wouldn't have minded if they'd thrown in the sports case or dock, but a piece of string that you put around your neck - no thanks.

# 4 Re: 24 hours with the shuffle
Good review. Thanks for the info. I agree about the necklace thing. I can't imagine I'd ever want to wear it around my neck.
I plan on heading over to the Apple store near me this weekend. Hopefully they have some in stock.

Good to hear about the sound quality. I had a tiny flash player once that had a s/n ratio of 85 dB and it sounded horrible so I was hoping this one's similar to the regular iPod's quality.
Since you have one right now, may I ask you some questions? First, one that I made a thread for, when you switch from shuffle to play-in-order while at a particular song, does it put you in the position in the playlist where that song is in or does it send you to the beginning of the playlist?
Also, does the three button press combo (play x 3) send you back to the beginning of the entire playlist in play-in-order mode or does it do something else?

Hey, just checked on your questions. Switching from shuffle to play-in-order puts you right in the same spot and plays the next song down in order, not resetting to the beginning of the playlist. Pressing play 3X in play-in-order mode does go to the first song on the playlist. In shuffle mode it reshuffles the music. Hope this helped.

Thanks for the info. I have been checking out flash players for a while and this is beginning to sound like a good purchase to me. I have always wanted simplicity in my music selection. I sometimes have a hard time choosing what to listen to on my Rio Karma since I have hundreds of artists on it. I've also always wanted a shuffle function that can be selected directly through the hardware instead of having to go through several nested menus. This seems to deliver on these fronts.
# 9 Re: 24 hours with the shuffle
I just got mine last night from the Apple store in Santa Rosa, so they are coming in to the stores. I only had a chance to listen for a little while last night and my initial impression is was that it did not sound as good as my 3G, but i selected the same song on both and swapped the headphone output. Good thing is they sounded pretty much the same but I think their is a hint of a different sound. I was flat out tired when i listened so i'm sure that's why I think nothing sounded quite right last night on either device. We are talking nuanced sounds that i was looking for too. Not something that lends well to being tired.
I agree with the original poster that this thing seems smaller than all of the photos that i've seen. Also regarding the the lanyard i agree that i would never be caught dead sporting around my neck above my clothes. I won't even wear the white earbuds cuz they sound like #### and i'm not much into free advertising for any company, even one that i like unless they start kickin' down free stuff. I will however wear the thing around my neck under a jacket or shirt while snowboarding since it makes super convenient to access and it's a perfect fit with the EX71 earphones with the short cord. Way less of a mess than the suppied earbuds. The thing is very light and unoticable when wearing it. I wish i had the option to give Apple back the earbuds in exchange for a USB extender. Found out last night that i can transfer music from my keyboard USB ports, but they will not charge the Shuffle.
When you come to a song in shuffle mode then switch to play-in-order mode it does put you in the correct position in the playlist. It does not go to the start of the playlist. The only thing is that when sliding from shuffle to play n order mode it's easy to accidently slide to the off position. The first time i tried that happened to me and when i turned it back on it started at the beggining of the playlist.
My initial opinion is that this thing sounds solid and is perfect for some of my activities. It's no frills though and if you are the type that needs to navigate to a specific song at any time or you are not properly playlisted, then the no screen thing is not for you. In my case i've already got tons of excellent playlists already set up. Currently my Shuffle is autofilling off of a playlist called 'all good' which contains over 400 songs that are 5 star rated. I will also be using my 'riders never die' playlist for when i'm snowboarding quite frequently. In my case this thing is the perfect complement to my 20gig iPod. I will use my ipod when traveling or at work when i can make any choice of music at any time and use the Shuffle when doing activities where no screen is needed and not having to worry about ruining a 400 dollar player when i eat #### on a rail.

I have a quick question: Does the Shuffle have to be turned off to recharge, or can you recharge it while it's in hold mode or playing?

Hey, I tried to use it while it was charging and it does not work. This is similar to other models in that they when they are connected to the computer they cannot be used to listen to music. I know there is a dock available for it, and a charger that pulgs into the wall but I don't know if those allow it to work while charging.

I know this may sound reeeaaallly stupid, but is it actually possible to have multiple playlists put onto the shuffle? Or are the songs just made into one long playlist?

One large playlist. There would be no way to access the different lists.

What's so bad about the lanyard? Wearing it around your neck would allow you to use only the short cable on the Sony 71's.

Can the Shuffle charge through a powered USB 1.1 port? Thanks. :)

you need to read ipod shuffle support in apple.com why usb port in Keyboard doesn't work.
usb keyboard port, and non powered usb hub won't work according to the support manual.
so you have to connect yours with computer directly into usb port (it doesn't matter whether it is usb 2.0 or 1.1 because they support high power for ipod shuffle.

I agree. The lanyard may not be the method of choice for American WASP's but in this part of the world the in thing is to wear your mobile phone exactly that way. A Shuffle around the neck will be "the" status symbol of choice within 2 or 3 months and Apple are very well aware of that fact.

Thanks for the answer. It stands to reason that if you've connected it to a computer with iTunes on it, there'd be no reason for the Shuffle to have to play. Can I annoy you with another question?
Can you charge the Shuffle while it's paused (if you don't want to lose your place in the current playlist), or does it have to be turned off?
Thanks!
# 25 Re: 24 hours with the shuffle
So whats the Batterie life like? Is it even replaceable?
# 26 Re: 24 hours with the shuffle
Some answers to the questions I have seen...
I don't know if it can charge through USB1.1 - I have only 2.0
Pausing a song, leaving the player on, charging it and then resuming playback will play the song exactly where it was left. (I did not have iTunes open when I charged it to avoid any updating.)
As for battery life, Apple says 12 hours. I have yet to use it for that long so I don't know how accurate that number is, but for something that small with no moving parts, it seems pretty reasonable. As with all other models in the iPod family, it is not a replaceable battery. It recharges through USB ports on the computer.

Incredibly solid. I feel like I could throw this thing around the room and nothing would happen. The only worry I have is the USB cap. It locks in place with 2 tiny ball springs (hard to describe, trust me on this) so I could see this piece coming off pretty easily once it wears down a little bit. If Apple does not already offer extra caps, it would not surprise me if they start in the next few months.

Very, very good point indeed. I never thought of that. But then again, i still don't really like the idea of wearing it around my neck for all the world to see. Maybe if i have it under my shirt or something...
