512MB or 1GB?
Hey
I'm going to buy an iPod shuffle, I just don't know whether to buy the 512MB or 1GB version. I already have an iPod mini, but I want the shuffle as an "on-the-go" player that I can take anywhere. I am going to China this summer and will most likely take the shuffle instead of the mini, because my mini could get stolen. My music collection is around 2GB. I have CAD$800 to spend in China, so money is an issue, because this purchase will either take CAD$130 (512MB) or CAD$180 (1GB with educational discount) out of that money. So, I am leaning to the 512MB, but it's gonna be a long 16 hour plane ride with only 120 songs! :D Which one should I go for?
Thanks in advance!

1GB bc of the plane ride.
why not just take the mini?

I was in a similar situation. I own mini, I'll be visiting Japan from next monday. It takes 11 hours to get there. I was leaning to 512MB as well, but then I saw Apple Store in San Francisco got only 1GB model in stock, and I got it...
Sure 1GB helps long flight and moving around a city where you want to carry only minimal stuff, even though I think probably for our usage, 512MB model will do fine after the trip.
But hey, for $40 USD more (with edu. discount) you have another 512MB (or as much as you want) for data space. I do a lot of data transfers (word doc, illustrator file, etc) and I could use some space, and if you have some extra space on your shuffle, you don't have to deal with deleting songs when you are moving documents files from your client's computer.
Just a thought.
I'll probably bring only my shuffle to the trip. I've got to bring my powerbook anyway...

I'd go for the GB if you have the $$; better value

Well if your music collection is just 2GB, and you want to use the shuffle as an on-the-go player, i'd get the 512MB one if i were you.

The battery won't last 16 hours anyway Apple only quote 12 hours and they are usually optimistic. 512 MB will last roughly 8 hours at 4 min per song.

Your mini won't be stolen if you're careful. Go for the 512. Like you need 240 songs that you wont beable to locate.

1gb definately! 50 bucks more for double the songs capacity.

I would buy one of the many battery packs available to extend battery life.

Just bring the iPod mini, that's why you bought it. I brought my iPod Photo to South Africa, no problem at all, I'd just recomend a case.

I don't see why you'd by a Shuffle JUST for your trip when you already have a Mini.
You said you were short on cash and you only have 2 Gigs of songs so why are you going to waste your money on a Shuffle when you have a half empty Mini sitting right in front of you. You are aware that Minis travel just as well as a Shuffle, right?
I can understand someone wanting a second iPod in the form of the Shuffle if they exercise a lot but you'll be taking a REALLY long plane ride to the Orient with a 12 battery on a Shuffle that can hold, MAX, 240 songs (1 GB)... I just don't get it...
Oh, well... spend you money anyway you like. :)

Check out my profile, I have many cases for my mini. Even if I still take my mini to China, I want to get a shuffle for working out. If I got a shuffle, I would be taking it almost everywhere, except for long car drives, where I'd take my mini. My mini is part of my stereo system, which is great. So, maybe I'll reconsider bringing my mini to China.
Thanks for the help!

I ordered a 512 but changed it the next day to the 1G. I know that down the line I'd start asking myself why I didn't get the higher capacity one. How about getting the 512mb version and get the battery extender (if it's out already)

1gb all the way...

if you have already ipod mini, you don't have to get 1GB. for everyday life, I think that 512MB is better. but for long trip, you will grab your mini. that's all.
I have 4G ipod 20GB, and ipod mini Silver. so I have no reason to buy 1GB shuffle. insteatd, I just ordered 512MB one. to me, it's more efficient.

I knew that for only 40 dollars you can get double the memory, but I was on a much more strict budget so I got the 512 and an armband for 130 dollars. This will be my new gym player and I don't trust that lanyard for running one bit.
If you really want an acessory such as a dock or the sport case and don't have too much money go for the 512 + acessory. Besides you have to wait 1 week less supposedly for the 512 than the 1 GB:)
