USB cover/cap - easy to lose?

I have a couple USB thumb drives that have a cap that covers the USB connector when you aren't using it. These things just slide over the connector. I've lost all but one of these caps as they are easy to misplace. From the looks of it, the iPod shuffle has the same type of cap. That is, you totally remove it from the main unit when you connect it to a USB port. IMHO, this is it's main flaw. Once you lose the cap (I'm sure most people will - especially if they have kids around that may play with it), the shuffle will then not look as slick and the USB connector will then be prone to dirt and damage.

At least one of the thumb drive maker (SanDisk maybe) has some of their thumb drives which don't have a cap. Instead, the USB connector actually slides out of the case when you need to connect it. When not in use, it slides back into the case. I think using this type of design for the USB connector would have been a much better idea for the iPod shuffle.

I agree with you. I am quite worried about the cap getting lost, and then having my iPod shuffle lose it's sleekness. It's not a particularly great aspect of the shuffle's design, and you would've thought an innovative and original-thinking company such as Apple would have come up with an ingenious solution to this issue.

Does anybody know how well the iPod is connected to the lanyard? I don't want it to suddenly fall off one day and smash to pieces on the floor.

It could be on a hinge sort of thing, but i guess that wouldn't last very long.

Speaking of the lanyard...if you lose the cap, does the lanyard still work with it. From the pics I've seen of this case/lanyard, I'm not sure how it attaches to the iPs.

The lanyard attaches to the iPod in exactly the same way as the USB cap does. It just clicks on. The only difference is that the lanyard cap has a hole through it, which the string that goes around your neck goes through.

Ah, ok. I guess I was confusing the lanyard with the sport case (available separately). I wonder how the sport case attaches.

Maybe they will sell a bag of 10 replacement caps. If not, perhaps a third party will - maybe different colors/designs to customize your iPs. Hey, a whole new iPod industry. :P

I read somewhere that the cap has some sort of ball-bearing spring closure or something. I'll try and find the site where it says that.

I am sure there is a secure way of mounting it, but when you put it on the lanyard you will have to find a place to put the cap. i am sure apple or someone will offer replacement caps for the inevitable caps that get lost.

Yes, there are a pair of ball-bearing spring closure things on both regular cap and lanyard cap. I was walking around with lanyarded shuffle around my neck all day long but I didn't feel unsecure.
