No, it is always better to eject it and "safely remove hardware" otherwise you risk corrupting files

It doesn't really take much effort now does it....

In fact, by asking this question, with the typing and clicking, you probably used more energy than you would ever unplugging the shuffle :D

If there is no disc activity, unplugging the Shuffle (or any USB storage device) without properly ejecting it shouldn't cause any problems. Microsoft has even admitted as much.

However, if the device is being accessed when you unplug it, you run the risk of losing any data that was being transfered and corrupting the file table.

Properly ejecting the device is so simple (two left-clicks in Windows or one click-and-drag in OSX) that it isn't worth the two seconds you might save by not doing it. Besides, if you don't properly eject the device, you'll be given a warning message that you have to click on anyway, eliminating any time you just saved.

actually, unlike win2K, xp doesn't object if you pull out usb drives or memory cards directly, even if you don't use the "safely remove hardware" wizard. No idea if the shuffle conforms to this.
