Powered hubs can be tricky as relates to providing battery charges to iPods..... most times they work fine, sometimes even though it is a "powered hub", a USB port on the hub doesn't actually get the power when the PC is shut-down. The only way to tell for sure is to try your specific powered-hub and see if it charges the shuffle when the PC is off.

Have any shuffle owners actually tried charging via a powered USB hub? They are much cheaper than the shuffle power brick...

I was considering getting a 4 port powered usb 2.0 hub. In the UK, I can get one for 7 rather than 19 for the apple brick.

I charge my shuffle every night via a powered usb hub but this hub is not connected to my pc. It's the small mini hub that I use with my laptop. It works great. I won't be spending my money on an apple charger - not worth it since I already had this mini-hub.

I have tried charging my shuffle with a powered hub, without connecting to my PC, but how come the orange status light in the front and back of the shuffle keep blinking? Is this normal? Is it really charging?

From what I understand from the included instruction card, the blinking orange light shows that the iPod is mounted or transferring data, which I think means it's just holding the charge steady, or maybe powering + charging slowly like a laptop battery, I'm not too sure.

So you would need to do is eject the iPod in iTunes, which stops iTunes from being able to update the iPod. When I do this, the light (instead of blinking) stays on orange which means it's charging, and turns green when it's done.

And I can confirm the charging thru the hub, just found out that mine charges even when my laptop is off or asleep. I think it just needs a hub with an external power supply, mine's a Belkin 7-port hub.
