So you dont HAVE to shuffle with the iPod Shuffle?
I'm confused, on first impressions I got the feeling that the point of the iPod Shuffle was that it always shuffled your songs, hence the name!
But from further reading on here and on the apple site, I read you can turn the shuffle function off, if this is the case, then it is certainly not well put accross and I have seen some bad press/comments about the fact it is constant shuffle!
So can you just have it play in the order you put the songs on, say if i put an album on, can i listen to it in order?
If this is the case, why is it even called iPod Shuffle when all ipod's have this function!?!
Finally, why the hell cant the regular iPod have a switch like this?! It would make it so much simpler if you were listening to all songs by an artist and decided you wanted shuffle on, you wouldn't have to go through the menus etc!

Yes, you can play straight through without it shuffling. It's a 3 way switch Off-->Play in order-->Shuffle. You may see something like this on the next generation iPods just like the click wheel was put into the 4G's after it showed up in the mini.

I thought the 3 way switch was Off -- Shuffle -- Repeat! The symbol is the same as repeat in iTunes and on the iPod....?
I thought OFF was the play in order if anything, then you can either repeat the song or shuffle...?

no the switch is OFF/PLAYINORDER/SHUFFLE. In order to repeat a song I think you need to press the back button, there is no dedicated "repeat" feature.
so yes, if you want to hear an album or audio book series IN ORDER, simply put those songs in order on the shuffle via iTunes, and play them using the play in order feature of the shuffle.

So why have they used the same symbol for PLAY IN ORDER on the Shuffle that means REPEAT in iTunes and the iPod...?
Surely they would have choose a different symbol?

yes, that's what I noticed too. however, doesn't that repeat symbol also mean repat an entire playlist or album in some cases? I guess it may mean to repeat the entire Shuffle, in order...

Yeah that's what I thought it might do, not repeat the song but play through all and repeat when it ends!

I combine audio book files and music on the same player. What if I want to listen to my music for a short while, then switch to a book? Or what if I want to turn on my player for my morning commute and go directly to a book. Without a screen and menu to navigate, how would I be able to find the book?
I suppose I could put the the book/s in a playlist and switch to "play in order," but that seems rather awkward. Could I conveniently switch back and forth or am I missing something?

No you don't always have to have it on shuffle. There's a three-way switch on the back of the iPod: the one for shuffle, the one for playing through songs in consecutive order, and the off switch.

look here, near the bottom of this page (Jumping to the beginning of a playlist):
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300553
for anyone who doesn't feel like going there:
"Press the Play/Pause button three times quickly to jump to and begin playing the first song in the playlist. The front status light will display green for 2 seconds and then turn off. If the rear switch is in the shuffle position, iPod shuffle will start playing the first shuffled song."
So, what you can do if you want to listen to some books, is make separate playlists for the different books, load them onto the shuffle manually, and then autofill or manually fill up the rest of your shuffle. When you want to listen to a book, hit the play button three times quickly to jump through your playlists, and you can reach your book.
All this talk about audiobooks makes me want to listen to one!

if you'll notice the repeat symbol in iTunes will repeat the entire playlist, which in effect will play through and then begin again at the beginning of the playlist.
