Resetting iPod without plugging in power adapter?

I have reset my 4g iPod (or so I thought) several times now simply by pressing and holding down the Menu + Select keys for several seconds. Upon doing so, I get the Apple logo and it appeared to reset. I did this because I had always heard the reset technique referred to as the "Menu+Select trick."

However, I was just looking at the user guide and it says to plug the power adapter into the iPod and THEN press menu+select. What happens if you don't plug in the power adapter? Could I have messed up my iPod?

Hi, resetting while plugged into the ac adapter is known as a "hard reset" which is an alternative way of resetting that sometimes remedies problems unresolved when a normal reset is done.

Thanks for the reply.

So, either reset is safe, right? If the problem that I'm facing isn't remedied with a "normal" reset, I just try the "hard reset"?

Is that the only difference?

Thanks again.

both reset possibilities are safe - the normal way (without plugged in) is recommended by apple. The hard reset has been observed by many users, including myself...
