"missing files" on ipod - see but cant play
Please choose the appropriate forum for this topic. Thank you. I've got a 20MG 4th gen clickwheel.
Out of the blue today, having added some new tunes, I cannot access any of my music on the iPOd, either directly or thru iTunes.
In other words, I can see all the albums and playlists on the iPod itself but when I try to play them it just skips through the tracks. When I play music from my iPod thru iTunes (usually no problem) i get an exclamation mark next to each track. Now every track has the exclamation mark next to it.
I know all the music is still on the iPod by the 13GB it is shown to be taking up on the drive and by the fact that I can see it all. But how do I get back to listening to it ?
Help please !

When there is an exclamation mark next to a file in iTunes, it means the song file isn't where iTunes thinks it's supposed to be. This happens if you move files in you directory without changing the path in iTunes. Double click on a song with the exclamation point next to it. iTunes will tell you that the file could not be located and will ask you to locate it. Then simply select the file from your directory. This will tell iTunes where it can find the song file in the future. Repeat for each song.

Thanks but it isn't a problem with the music files on my PC - it's the music on my iPod which shows up the exclamation marks. I can neither play the music on my iPod directly or through iTunes when I have the iPod connected to my PC. Can't understand why as all the tracks are indicated. So it's as if the files have gone walkabout on my iPod but how do you resolve that one...?

Man, that's ####ed up. I would try formatting your iPod with the iPod Updater and re-installing iTunes. Then, re-transfer your songs to the iPod after updating with the latest software.

That will screw me as i will lose most of the songs on my iPod - I don't have a back-up for 60% as I've just switched PCs.
Is there anyway of formating or 'rebooting' iPod without erasing the files on there? Or can you trace the files on the iPod through software and have the iPod recognise any new locations?
