Welcome to the lounge. If you are from the UK then you have a volume cap on the iPod and need to use euVolume Boost (http://www.eupod.com).
Also, (http://www.pochoirs.de/software_es.htm) - the software is iMod and you can read about here (http://www.ipodlounge.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=45402)
If not then you can:
-right click on the song
-select 'Get Info'
-select 'Options' tab
There is a volume slide bar there that will allow you to raise the volume on the songs.
To highlight all songs at once:
Edit>Select All

Yes, it will work for every file you have in your itunes library.
If you want even more control over your mp3's, download and use mp3gain. It will allow you to equalize your mp3's so the volume level is the same from album to album. You can also increase the volume if you want. I would recommend using the itunes method first though.

didt work. maybe the ipod just doest get that loud. i tried stock earphones and tried sony v150 headphones and it doest really get louder it just the volume maxes out at the middle of the volume slider and if you put it up more it just sounds the same as if it was in the middle. i tried the itunes method btw.

Sounds like the iPod has some messed up firmware. Try resetting the iPod.

iThink...... you should play with your iPod and not worry about messing it up, well, that is if you have the extended warranty for it off course. But, if you don't know how to turn the volume up or down, I dont blame you, Apple thought that the iPod is user friendly enough, not enough, but very user friendly that just looking at the iPod, you will know how to do every tiny things you can do with the iPod. Apple = Good Quality, Poor Instructions and trouble shooting and not to mention, tech support.

question was, can you control the volume, make it louder or quieter (not that i want it anymore quiet than it already is!) on the 4g 20gb ipod.
looks although it has been answered, thank you very much and if there is anymore information i need please let me know!

I'm gonna try and make this simple. When you are listening to the iPod, on the "Now Playing" screen, move you finger to the right on the scrollwheel, and the volume should increase. Hope I answered your question.

Also, make sure that the hold switch is off.

good recommendation since mp3gain (http://mp3gain.sourceforge.net/faq.php#start) does not resort to using peak amplitude in it's calculations which all other "normalizers" do.

Three suggestions if your iPod doesn't turn out to be defective:
1. Make sure the Sound Check option is turned OFF in Settings. The option equalizes volumes across all of the songs on your iPod, but in the process it reduces the volume on all of them as well.
2. If you're using a third-party headphone, you might want to look for a headphone with lower impedance.
3. If the above doesn't help you, consider buying a portable headphone amp.
