Playlists on a full mini, and capacity questions.

1) I have recently filled up my iPod. My library is about 900 songs, there are 815 songs on my mini, and it's full. Recently a window popped up in iTunes saying a new playlist had been created, '(my mini's name) selection' with 815 songs on, so the same ones as on the mini. I was wondering: how does iTunes decide which songs to put on this playlist? Also, none of my other playlists show up on my mini, just on iTunes. Is this right? Can I no longer have other playlists whilst I have this Selection one? One more thing about this- it says that these 815 songs take up 3.65 GB, surely more should fit on?

2) On Settings, then About, it says: Songs 824, Capacity 3.7GB, Available 2.8GB. Why does it say there are still 2.8GB available?! I'm very confused!

Any help is much appreciated :)
