10gb left on a 40gb? What happened?

I got a 40 gb for Xmas, and I have 4.5gb of songs according to iTunes and my folder properties on my PC. I checked the amound of space left on my ipod the other day, i noticed that it had 10 gb left! What happened!

Im pretty sure 40 - 5 doesnt equal 30gb used.

So how do I have 10gb left?

And yes I know that the ipod uses 2-3gb on settings and firmware.

Thankyou in advanced.

A buddy of mine had this same problem, but with a 3rd gen 20 GB. He said it was fixed after he downloaded and installed the iPod software update. Other than that, I don't know what else would work.

Yes, make sure that everything is up to date, and try again. I think that you'll be fine. Hope you like your new iPod :).

It doesnt take 2-3 gig on firmware! People get this right, its not even how you FLIPPING format the hard drive. The reason why its 18.5 instead of 20 or 37.5 instead of 40 is because 1024 bytes is in 1 meg not 1000. If you do some math you can figure out it doesnt work out to 40GB but to 37.5. A 3GB firmware would be bigger then windows XP, we wont see that on the ipod for a while.

try restoring your iPod, open the updater and click restore

WARNING!!: you will lose all your data on the iPod, meaning you'll have to resync with iTunes, but being you only have 5GB of music it won't take long

The iPod's software often glitches on displaying the correct information. Often it won't display the correct number of songs, space left, or even the iPod's name. This was a big problem with earlier iPods but I haven't heard too many reports of this with the new 4G pods. I'd also reccomend restoring your iPod. It generally fixes the problem. But yes, it will wipe the iPod's hard drive clean.

Well when viewed as a hardrive it says it has 10gb left, says the same when synced with iTunes, it takes 10 mins to transfer my songs through USB. It has the correct number of songs and stuff.
