Cant delete ipod files

I've searched the forums but can't find the answer so have to post!

I've about 3000 songs on my ipod playlist. Last week I messed up a few things trying to use Media Centre, which I've since uninstalled.

I'm now left with a copy of my ipod playlist in my itunes library, and the files for these are stored on the ipod BUT AREN'T the same files as the original ipod files. Therefore, there are 6000 files on the ipod, 3000 of which I don't want! How can I delete them?

- Deleting the library only removes the playlist, not the file on the ipod.
- Deleting the library then updating the ipod removes the ipod version of the song but NOT the library linked file in the ipod.
- I can do it one by one, by using 'show song file' then deleting his and clearing the playlist entry, but must I do this for 3000 songs???!!!!

Please help! :(

What?

I'm confused as to what happened to you I think.

How are your currently managing your iPod? Software and sync settings please. Also what kind of computer are you using. What kind of iPod as well please.

Really the simplest thing is to just start over. That is if all songs that you want on the iPod happen to be on your iPod and safely in iTunes. You could restore the iPod to factory settings and then automatically update with iTunes and start freash.

If you are manually updating, though, you'll have to do it song by song, or selecting multiple songs at once and then selecting delete.

More iformation will help me try to help you, though.

Hi

I've fixed it. But FYI.

I've only a 20G hard drive & 40G ipod, therefore all song files are only on ipod.

They were stored in duplicate: ie. 2 copies of each of the 3000 songs. 1 copy related to the playlist in the ipod, the other to the itunes library. I wanted to delete the latter.

I died it by opening each of the 50 folders in the F (ipod) drive that contain the files. I sorted them by date created and deleted all those created after the problem started. Then I deleted the playlist. Took 30 mins. pffffff

Pity it's not possible to delete many files at once in the ipod from itunes. Or have I missed something?

I think I see now.

Manual updating is still a little confusing to me as I do not use it at all.

Do you use iTunes, then or another program? You could mass delete songs from the iPod by selecting the iPod and selecting multiple songs at once and just pressing the delete button.

Glad you were able to solve your problem.

Yes, I use itunes, but all my problems began when I tried to use Music Center 10. I'm back to itunes for good!

I couldn't delete the music from itunes because they were in the itunes library, and linked to files in the ipod! Deleting a playlist in the library only deletes the actual music file if the music file is on the computer hard drive in the itunes folder.

I hope that's clearer? :D

Thanks!

On manual update there shouldn't be any connection between files on the iPod and files in iTunes.

You want to have the iPod selected, not the library, when trying to delete songs from the iPod.

Of course maybe I'm still floating around the issue. I often misunderstand manual situations as I do not use it often. Glad you got your problem solved.
