1st Gen Ipod problem

Hi Guys -

I have a 1st gen 5g ipod. My problem is that when I plug it into my computer the computer does not recongnize it. It is connected via a firewire cable and when plugged in the Charging battery comes up on the screen but nothing else. When unplugged it works fine. The comp. is not recognizing it at all, not as a drive or anything.

I brought it to the apple store and they had no idea? Does anyone here have any ideas?

Please help - thanks -

Generally, this means there's an issue with either your firewire cable or the port on the iPod. I'm guessing the Apple store folks tried it on a Mac there, so its probably not your computer's firewire port. Did they try another cable too? If so, that leaves just your iPod's port. Something in there isn't getting the data connection through, just the power.

You should be able to see the 6 metal pins on the center bit of the port. Are they all there? Are they bent or broken? Are they covered in dirt and need cleaning?

And what about the metal tabs along the outside? Are the broken or bent in?
