Several iPod questions

So I've had this thing for a year, and I've only had the same songs on it for that year (ya i know) mainly b/c I didn't know about this place and how to keep those songs on when you go to another computer

What I'm using now is a Laptop that has all my songs on it that need to be transfered. I gave up on what I had saved on the iPod and just got those songs again, i don't really care anymore.

my questions:

How do you turn Auto-sync off so i can pick and choose what goes on this thing? I can't figure it out

Why won't it charge on USB but it does on Firewire?

My battery is fully charged going into the uploading of over 2k songs and it only lasts about 200 songs into it, IF that b/c I can't keep it charging while uploading

thanks for the helps guys/gals :D

With iPod connected, open iTunes right click on the iPod icon and select iPod options. A box will open with all the various choices, choose Manual sync.

Only the 4G (newest) iPods charge via USB, I'm guessing your is a 3G being a year old (the one with the row of buttons under the screen).

A fully charged battery should last longer than 200 songs whilst uploading, maybe being a year old the battery is rundown a bit.
To charge while uploading you would need to buy a combined USB/ Firwire cable, use the USB for uploading and the Firewire (plugged into the AC adaptor) for charging simultaneously.
