Memory Problems

I just got an iPod 40GB and loaded in 10GB.

The way I have loaded it in, is by taking my CD's and putting them in my hard drive and then clicking "Import" on iTunes.

I went to add more music tonight, and I got the message saying, "You do not have enough memory to Import..."

How can I fix this, or clear memory without losing what I have on the iPod?
