Broken 4th generation ipod
I know somebody who is offering me a broken 4g Ipod for less than fifty dollars. I'm not sure what is wrong with it, but they said its in good cosmetic condition. Do you think I would be able to send it in to apple for maintenence and recieve a working one back? Thank you.

It depends, do they have warrenty or extended warrenty?

well wouldn't it still be covered under Apples 1 year battery replacement policy? Could I send it in for a battery replacement and get another back? I've done this in the past with my 10gig 3rd generation ipod and they sent me back a brand new one. Let me know.

If it is registered under their name then why don't they send it in for repair? Is it stolen? Out of warranty? Sounds strange that they are willing to sell it and not take advantage of the 1 year warranty that comes with the iPod.
I think you better ask that person why are they selling it and not returning it to Apple to be replace/repaired.

They got it from a liquidator online and it showed up DOA so they ended up getting a new one instead. This one sat in their closet for a month or so. Thats the story.

If you purchase it you should be able to return it. You can get the serial number off of the back of the iPod (you will need it) and put in a service request.

But since it is from a liquidator, do you think that would make a difference? I mean, is there some way that apple keeps track of purchased ipods?

I don't think it will make a difference where it was purchased from. Apple will honor their warranty. Just tell them that it was purchased second hand.
