Hot, hot iPod

Generally my iPod does everything it is supposed to, and is a joy to use. I like to use my iPod as a portable drive. Because my computer sucks, my iPod actually has more free space on it than my computer. Because of this, I have been using torrent downloading programs to download movies and so forth (large files that take a long time to download) directly onto my iPod, as the files themselves won't fit on my computers drive. Sometimes I leave the computer on overnight to download.

After a couple of hours of continuous downloading, however, I notice that the back of the iPod heats up immensely, to a much higher degree then charging it with the AC adapter. I'm getting worried that I might be damaging my iPod by using it in this way. Can anyone tell me if this is normal?

it's fine, but you may wanna consider stop downloading those movies because they're illegal. like is it so hot you can't touch it or just hot enough that you can feel when you put it up to your cheek?

When you are using it as a hard disk, the disk is kept spinning the whole time, this results in extra heat. It shouldn't be anything to be worried about unless it is getting extremely hot.

Its not normal because you're activity isn't normal. The iPod can disperse enough heat to handle some music transfers of many minutes but its probably not doing so well with hours worth of drive access.

You should look into ways to cool it. A ice pack with a towel around it should make a nice stand to lean the iPod on. That should help suck heat out. Just make sure you don't go to far and freeze the iPod. Even a good fan blowing across the body of the iPod will help.

You're probably not hurting it a lot but its easy enough to keep it cooler with household items.

MikeM above is spot on...... the heat is beyond specifications of what the iPod was designed for.......since it's intended use was mainly for music transfers it's ability to dissipate heat is designed around that usage.
