Few Questions about iPod (Possible new iPoder here)

Please choose the appropriate forum for this topic. Thank you. Hey everyone,
I'm a new user and I'm considering asking for an iPod this Christmas, but before I do there are a few questions I'd like to have answered:

A). My computer only has a USB 1.1 port. Will I be able to hook up the iPod and use it as usual?

B). Let's say I build together a library in iTunes, sync over all the music onto my iPod and then delete some of the songs off my hard drive. Next time I go to sync with the iPod, will it delete these songs or leave them there untouched?

C). Is it possible to hook up an iPod through my home stereo using the (pardon my inexperience with cables) red and white cables?

D). Can I run my iPod using the AC adapter without needing it to be in the USB cradle?

E). If I buy a basic headphone-to-cassette car kit for the iPod, will it power the unit through the cassette or will I need to buy a special DC adapter?

I would appreciate any help that can be given. Thanks in advance.

The answers to your questions: :)

A) Yes, it will work fine. You might notice it would be quite slow - especially if your transfering many files. Might be worth it to get a Firewire / USB2 PCI expansion card to get the full speed (It's worth it trust me lol)

B) iTunes will mirror what is on your library with the iPod. Now if this means that there are no songs in your library, it will remove the songs from your iPod as well (unless you configure it otherwise, IE manually)

C) RCA cables? Yes :) You can get a 1/8th" miniplug to RCA cable that would plug in the headphones port of the iPod, or better yet use a dock's pre-amp output for much better sound. (Still would use 1/8th" to RCA)

D) Yes, if you take the firewire cable, connect it to the AC Adapter and unplug the cable from the dock (then to your iPod) it will work fine!

E) Unfortunatly no, you would need to get something like a lighter adapter to power it.

Hope this helps you man. Purchasing my iPod was one of the best things to happen in my life - i'm shure you wouldent be disapointed with one if you did get one. :)

A. Yes, but the uploading from pc to iPod will take longer..

B. When syncing the deleted songs will be off your iPod as well. You can choose not to sync but manually copy songs to your iPod.

C. You can hook it up to your stereo like you would hook up other devices with a line-out when you have a dock... without dock you'd have to use the ear phones connector which is ####ty.

D. I don't know exactly what you mean here (English isn't my 1st language)... but if you're wondering whether you can listen to music while it's plugged in with the adaptor, yes you can. You can't listen to the music when it's plugged in your computer as far as I know.

E. I don't think just the cassette thing can charge the iPod, I don't have a car kit so I wouldn't know for sure. I believe there is a car kit for sale which also includes a cable you plug into the cigarette lighter thing.

A. yes it will work although very slow
B. the songs will be deleted you need to set the iPod to manual update songs.
C. dunno what you mean by red and white cables
D. yes it will charge just by having the cable plugged into the bottom
E. no, those adapters do not supply power, you will need a cigarette lighter adapter that goes into the dock connector on the bottom of the iPod

Hope that helps

Okay I understand most of what was said. Where in iTunes would I manually set this to not happen? Second question, kind of dumb, what is a 'firewire' cable, I thought firewire was only a MAC-compatible cable, but maybe I'm wrong. Is the iPod headphone port a different size than most?

or better yet use a dock's pre-amp output for much better sound. (Still would use 1/8th" to RCA)

what do you mean dock's pre-amp output?

sorry if i sound like a moron, i'm just not too educated in these matters.

the firewire cable isn't a mac only thing, there are such things as firewire cards for PC's. THe headphone jack is a starndard size so you can use any headphones. The dock gives you a better quality sound then the headphone jack when you hook it up to your stereo system.

Firewire (more commonly called IEE-94 or something crazy like that on PCs) is available on both Macs and PCs, but it's very unusual to see it as a standard port on a PC. You can easily buy a Firewire card for your computer, though, to give you the fastest transfer speed (and the least number of headaches).

The iPod uses a standard headphone jack, the same one found on any Discman or MP3 player.

when you say this, do you mean hook up the iPod while it is in the dock to the stereo? and how would I hook it up from the dock to the stereo, instead of the iPod to the stereo?

the dock has a built in line-out port (basically a standard 1/8" jack) that bypasses the iPod's amp therefore you're getting a better sound going to your stereo

Now if I am wanted to kill two birds with one stone I COULD just buy a FM transmitter and transmit it wirelessly to my home stereo's FM radio and also in my car, and just leave the iPod in the dock while at home for the power supply and a cigarette adapter while on the road, correct?

yeah, you could do that if you wanted

would the best FM transmitter be the iTrip? I've researched and that seems to be the best, but I'd like your opinion.

Yes you can do that, but the sound quality will not be nearly as good as using the line-out signal from the dock to feed into your home stereo.

Or, you can pick up a Wireless router and a WiFi music receiver. Then you can use iTunes as a server for your music to be played on your home stereo. The sound is awesome!

I am using the receiver from Roku (http://www.rokulabs.com) .

There are others on the market, but the Roku ones are really cool looking and the product is really nice.
