iPod mini static?

Okay so I have an iPod mini. I love it to death! I got it last March and since then, it's pretty much become my best friend. Well everything's fine until this past weekend. I noticed that it'll play out a lot of static. At first I thought "eh nothing major, no worries" but it hasn't stopped. It's actually gotten worse. I haven't been able to actually listen to more than maybe one song in the past two days because the static is so bad. I noticed that if i put pressure on the wheel, it'll sometimes fade away but on the other hand, sometimes it'll only get worse. So how do I make the static stop? Can't live without my pretty little pink iPod so any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a bunch!

The mini static problem is well known.... and particularily for the mini's made in the time period you purchased (i.e. early models).... there is a feeling Apple has fixed mini's since the first of the year, but you never know as Apple rarely admits problems, just quietly fixes them.

What is surprising is that it is not in the FAQ part of the iPod lounge since it is such a high profile topic.

Since you have a year warranty, you need to return your mini before March 2005. Contact Apple Support on Apple's web site and they will send you a box to mail-in the mini. Bottom-line..... it can't be fixed and they will send you a replacement (either new or refurbished).

Okay. So for sure, gotta get a new one. Fair enough. Are they gonna give me a hard time about replacing it or will they pretty much say "alright, heard it a million times before, just send it in"? Also, I have another question that isn't exactly a "problem" but it's kind of annoying. On iTunes in the Purchased Music folder, usually it has it in order of when you bought the song. But my mom came in and messed with it, now i dont know how to get it back to date of purchase rather than alphabetically. Thanks a bunch!

They won't hassle you about returning it.... fill-out their on line service request (link below).... they send you a pre-paid shipping box to send it back for "analysis"..... they will either repair it (not really possible) or send you a replacement...note they can send you a new one or refurbished mini . The static problem is caused by a very flimsy circuit board connector in the iPod that is tied to the headphone jack.

On the purchased music folder...... Go up to like "song name" then right click (if using windows) or click/hold until you get a drop down list of things you can show in the window... date added will be one of them.... check mark that and then when the date added column is visible in your tune listing, click on that header to sort either way (earliest purchase or latest purchases)

yesterday my mini started doing exactly the same thing! if i touch the wheel it gets better. i sent away for a box from apple to send away my iPod last week because my mini was mysteriously skipping songs... i got the box but am waiting to send it because i want it for the ski trip im going on in 4 days (long drive)...

my question: when i send it away, should i include a note in the box saying my mini now has a static problem too? or will they figure it out?? or am i only supposed to send my mini, no note or antyhing

Yes....include a note taped to the iPod itself..... and if you can update the online service request you did that would be good as well..... they will use it as reference to why the iPod was sent in.

The iPod mini static problem is a physical/mechanical thing as opposed to distortion in the playback of a tune because it was encoded/ripped improperly.
