Cold ipods
I have never experienced taking any form of hdd's outside(at least not when they are in use). Right now the temperatures outside go as low as -15c. When i get my ipod(next wednesday!), i am afraid i might leave it in my car and it freeze. Is it possible for it to get cold enough to not play? If so, would ipod socks help keep it warm?

check the manual for the ipod's operating temperature range.
an ipod sock might help, but not indefinitely. just try to keep the ipod out of the cold as much as you can.

swiped right from apple's website:
Environmental requirements
* Operating temperature: 32?? to 95?? F (0?? to 35?? C)
* Non operating temperature: -4?? to 113?? F (-20?? to 45?? C)
* Relative humidity: 5% to 95% noncondensing
* Maximum operating altitude: 10,000 feet (3000 m)

create a strap that connects the ipod to your "unit"
it will stay warm all the time! and with it being so cold outside, the temperature should even itself out and it won't get too hot OR too cold!

ROFL!
P.S. I'm so sick of my sig being deleted for the reason "TOO BIG!" - I just spent 15 mins making a nice one that was 300x50 px and is less than 5kb.
I understand the mods need to keep up on things, but give me damn break guys - my sig is fine and meets the guidelines - leave it alone!
Check out White Wonder's below mine - his is nearly 18kb! Mine is 3kb!

lol, maaybe, but he'd probably need an ipod mini for it to be snug on his "unit." a regular ipod would be to large.
oho, snap! lol :P
jk man :)
haha, i was actually wondering that too since i'm a canuck myself and as you know, theres cold weather up there. whereabouts from canada are you ethan? i'm from halifax.

iPod Socks? Now I've seen it all. The iPod has been elevated to a living breathing thing capable of keeping itself warm as long as it is clothed properly.

Maximum operating altitude: 10,000 feet (3000 m) WTF? i used mine in a plane at 35,000 feet.
still works fine.
why would it stop working at 10,000 feet anyway?

why would it stop working at 10,000 feet anyway? The air pressure i think. Lots of things dont work in high places, like plasma tvs

the only problem I've had is that at around 15 degrees F the headphone wires get really stiff, and it's really a pain.
# 20 Re: Cold ipods
So, when I go climbing in the summer, there is a distinct risk I might not be able to use my iPod. No seriously, up here at the UofA(University of Alberta) I see tons of people walking around in the -25 weather with thier iPods out. It's all good.
# 21 Re: Cold ipods
Only side effect that ive seen walking around with my mini in the cold about 5 degress Farenheit is the screen turns funny colors and where the headphone is closest to the screen is reg color

Where do you guys put your ipod? I put it in my musky pocket (the case smells like my crotch sometimes, manly and odorific!) and the thing is, the side facing outwards is cold but the part touching my skin is burning hot! Okay, maybe just warm. This happens on the bus and while flying coach, but I don't think it matters much. I don't think an ipod sock will work, keeping it close to your unit is the best answer.

Don't leave your ipod in the car, cause a crook like me might take it, plus the sock will not keep it protected. The sock might keep it from being exposed to the sun if you leave it on the dash board, but it will not keep it warm. Here is why, your body generates heat which is released by your skin. Clothing keeps this heat around your body longer, in turn keeping your warm. The heat dissipates leaving you colder if you don't move around to keep blood flow to generate more heat. That being said. Your ipod generates heat from the battery keeping it warm, plus the metal backing of the ipod itself will heat up. Again this is only good for a short period of time as the metal backing will dissipate the heat quickly when in an environment as cold as your car. Will it freeze? Not too sure, but it might effect the ipod or the battery itself.
