ipod died after pluggin in firewire wrong way.....
Basically i have a external HD that has loose firewire ports and i hooked my ipod (1st gen 10 gb) to it with the firewire in the wrong way. The ipod now can play music and charge via firewire but not mount on a computer. Pluggin it into a computer only charges the ipod. Apple of course is willing to "repair" (and by repair I'm sure they mean replace it with a refurb) the ipod for $250. I luckly ended up buying a 2nd gen 10 gb form a friend and was plannign on giving this one to my gf till this happened.
SO the question is, is there anyway for myself to fix this problem? Any resources for this sorta thing? Or should i just ebay the thing for spare parts and or take out the HD and put it in a external enclosure to use as a normal HD (can you even do that with an old ipod HD?) Any other projects that can be doen with a semi dead ipod?

Welcome to the lounge. My suggestion - try connecting to the PC & after connecting reset the iPod, open the updater and try to restore it.

Im fairly sure I fried the ipod board or messed up something by inserting the firewire cable into that external HD the wrong way. I know its not the cables fault. And hooking it back to the computer, like i said, just charges the ipod, even after hard restarts and such...

wow how were you able to get it in there backwards since the two sides are different shapes anyway?

Its a fairly cheap external enclosure and somehow one of the port got bent up, i didn't notice this till it was too late.
