Suddenly Lost Tunes

I have been a long time owner of iPods having bought one of the first first generation units. With the introduction of the 4G iPods I bought a 20 GB unit. I dutifully upgraded to Version 3.0.2 and all was going well until yesterday when it stopped playing in the middle of a tune. My first thought was that I had run out of battery power but on inspection the battery showed almost a full charge. However all my tunes had vanished.

Thinking back I remembered that I had some difficulty when I last updated my tunes using iTunes 4.7. It took a long time recognizing my iPod and hung-up in the updating process. I finally got it to update and the iPod worked fine for about a week until the sudden shut-down mentioned above.

BTW, I have a PowerMac G4 running OS 10.3.6.

After the shut-down I was unable to get iTunes to recognize to iPod so I re-installed 4.7. that didn't help so I tried to re-install version 3.0.2 on the iPod but it wouldn't allow me to giving me a message in the installation process that said I had to be using OS 10.1.7 (?) or higher. Since I am running 10.3.6 that didn't make sense.

Fortunately I had a copy of Version 3.0.1 so I installed it after using the Restore option. The updating of my tunes then went very smoothly using iTunes 4.7.

I then updated my iPod to Version 3.0.2 and so far all is well. However, I'm concerned that either Version 3.0.2 is unstable or my iPod is defective. Has anyone else had a similar problem and if so what is you advice?

Thanks for your help,

Earle
