iPod causing host computer to freeze / crash - some thoughts.
Bought my wife a 3G in Singapore last year and it worked fine with her PC and iTunes combination until about a month ago. We then started to experience what appears to be the growing problem reported here - namely the Pod causes the host computer to freeze, crash or reset.
We have 4 PCs in this house - a bog standard Athlon 2000 workhorse which the Pod was originally synched to, a Compaq Presario 3000 laptop, a Media Centre Shuttle and my own home-grown over-clocked ridiculous PC.
The iPod freezes and crashes all of these machines, each of which has a different firewire chipset (2 machines are on the Apple compatibility list). Unlikely to be the PCs methinks....
The list of errors includes:
1) Freezing - the host machine will just lock up until the iPod is removed and will then merrily carry on.
2) Blue Screen of Death - the 'corrupted_mmpool' driver error.
3) Some machines will recognise the iPod in the list of removable devices and assign it a drive letter - attempting to access that drive (in disk mode as well) causes a crash / freeze/
4) Attaching the iPod in 'Disk Mode' often causes a hard reset of all the PCs.
Sound familiar to some of you ??!! Well... I bumped the iPod into diagnostic mode and ran the HDD Scan. Or rather I tried to.... the Pod reports the 'Start' message and sits like that for hours. I gave up after leaving it overnight. Every other diagnostic reports OK.
So... ladies and gents - I think the problem here is not your computers, not your firewire chipset, not your drivers, not Itunes, not XP-SP2... it's another fault with the iPod. Our original host computer has not changed (it's not even connected to the internet) since the iPod was first installed which means that the damn Pod is the guilty cuplrit. Q.E.D.
I think it's the HDD, judging by the scan failure and the fact that the thing refuses to spin down the drive whilst it attempts to connect / synch.
Personally (and I know all of you will disagree :) ) , I think they are overpriced, underperforming, badly made bits of good-looking tat. However, it's what my wife wants, so I'm doomed to attempt to fix it.
Those of us in this position obviously cannot use the Restore function from the Updater software ... Equally, I am not prepared to pay Apple 2/3rds the price of a new one to fix this (only to see the shoddy quality mess up again at some point in the future)... so what now ?
Does anyone think that replacing the hard-drive (dead easy to do yourself - many guides on the 'net available) would be worthwhile ? I think this might be a solution - format it directly from the command prompt in Windows using the FAT32 format and it should then be recognised as a USB HDD from within Windows. Whilst you're at it, those of you with 10 or 15 GB models could go out and buy a 40 or 80 Gb replacement drive.
Apple could not give a toss about this problem - check out their own forums to see the wall of silence on this issue (another reason to buy a different brand) so it's up to us to try and fix it.
Any thoughts and experiences / comments welcome.

Experience, rather than suggestion I'm afraid ...
I've had very similar problems with my 3G 20GB iPod. I still don't have a fix for the problem. It either hangs or crashes my PC when I try to format (even from command line) or Restore with the updater software. Although the Updater software doesn't even recognise the iPod any more. Have had the same experience with Apple phone support. Eventually get to the point where they say ... "you see we only really work with Macs here so all we can do is point you to the relevant online articles"
Anyway, two points:
1/ I sent my iPod and when it came back it was working fine ... standalone. But as soon as I tried to connect it to my PC all the old problems were back. I guess they updated my iPod on a mac and formatted it for Mac. But that it doesn't mean that formatting for PC is going to work.
2/ I remember what kicked this all off. I had an error whilst transferring a file from PC to iPod via iTunes. This froze iTunes and the iPod and ?I had to pull the iPod out of the docking station to move on. At some point later on I got a whole load of Chkdsk errors referencing some system files on the iPod. I suspect that what is going on here is that some base files that the PC needs are corrupt and so not even formatting can work. Obviously these files aren't used when formatting for mac ... so hence everything works fine at the service centre.
Now to work out how to get access to the Hard disk to either delete, or restore those damamged files ...
Will try to remember to report back. Gonna try a suggestion in another thread on this site ... to use a USB connection instead of the firewire. Perhaps that will let me access the hard disk and format it ......
later

Success!!
So, I used my Mum's USB cable, that she got with her iPod mini. I put the iPod into disk mode and connected it to my PC with the USB cable .. and I could now access it with MyComputer.
iTunes tried to kick in and suggest that I needed to restore the iPod, but I cancelled that screen and went straight to MyComputer, right clicked on the iPod and selected format ... ticking the Quick format option before then setting it off with OK.
And, hey presto ... the format worked ... !!!
Once formatted, I rebooted the PC (don't know why really!) and then got the iPod into diskmode again before finally connecting it to my PC with the Firewire cable. When iPod updater asked to do its stuff this time I let it carry on and everything worked fine.
iPod has been working perfectly for three days now ... NO THANKS TO APPLE !!
I hope this helps some others.

You my friend, are a GEEEEEENIUS!!!!
It worked, It worked, finally finally finally!!!! After being told everything from reinstalling all the software to reinstalling drivers from my motherboard (??!!!) this simple solution worked!! And I didn't need a graduate degree in computer technology!!
Two points I would like to add for anyone else reading this:
1. Putting your ipod in disk mode is easy...turn the ipod on and off, then hold the previous and next buttons simultaneously as soon as you see the apple logo.
2. When I formatted my ipod by right clicking the ipod icon in "My computer" it said the application would close when formatting was complete. It didn't close, but my ipod said "OK to disconnect"...I removed it everything was fine.
Apple Customer Service SUCKS!!! When I called them for help, they basically said it wasn't their problem, but if I paid them $49, they would confirm they couldn't do anything about it. Thank God for the ipod lounge!!

i tried this strategy. unfortunately, my computer screen just freezes up when i try to click on the ipod...
# 5 Re: iPod causing host computer to freeze / crash - some thoughts.
Well, here is what I did before I tried digby's suggestion: Backed up all my music files onto CD. Uninstalled itunes and ipod updater completely. Rebooted. Went to apple site and downloaded latest itunes and lates updater software. Rebooted, put ipod into disk mode and continued as described above.
Maybe that would help?

yeah mine too for a while...... then while its frozen the iPod isn't connected to my pc at all and I can't format or anything. its just awful! :(
I noted a new error message last time mine crashed though to go with the:
"Driver_corrupted_mmpool"
and that was an error in "disk.sys"
Anyone know anything about these?
# 7 Re: iPod causing host computer to freeze / crash - some thoughts.
Has anyone figured out a solution to this problem? I tried all the things suggested here, and I just got more blank screens as well as blue screens o' death. This describes my problem to a T. Help? Anyone?

Not sure if it had anything to do with it, but we had installed Service Pack 2 just prior to having all these ipod problems. I uninstalled it, performed the steps above and it worked.
Hope that helps.

Mine iPod hgad the same problem ... works fine alone but cannot connect to PC... windows recognizes it and assignes letter but that's all. ...and I cannot format because it's 40GB FAT32... windows doesn't know that there is FAT32 PArtition bigger than 32GB... :(

None of the above solutions worked for me. No matter how I connected it, the ipod froze and crashed my computer.
On a whim, I tried it on my friends Mac. He was easily able to run a restore on the ipod, and now it connects to my computer and transfers songs just like it used to.
Just a thought for those who can't solve this problem: Try formatting on a Mac. Worked for me.
# 11 Re: iPod causing host computer to freeze / crash - some thoughts.
This didn't work for me....I think the reason why is because my ipod is freezing too! So I can't format a frozen drive right?
Like maybe windows is freezing because the ipod is frozen.....

When my ipod did this, I used my Best Buy PSP and they put in a new hard drive. That fixed it right up.
