free replacement in-ear headphones
Please choose the appropriate forum for this topic. Thank you. I got my new mini not so long ago. I didn't notice the problem with the sound at first. After un-capping the EU volume limit it became obvious that there was less volume and NO bass in the left channel. In my haste I didn't test the problem properly. I did the firmware restore and tried another set of different headphones. I should have tested several headphones and more importantly tested the iPod headphones on a different device. My bad, lazy me!
So I sent the iPod for repair and of course it came back with a note saying no problem found. It was only then that when I had cooled down I found that all along it was the left speaker in the ear-piece that was faulty.
I rang the apple support and told them this and they were very sympathetic. I casually asked if as an act of goodwill they could offer better quality replacements (it can't hurt to ask!). They said no problem and what would I like! I asked if I could have the in-ear headphones, and they said that would be ok :-)
I got them the next day. I must say they are much better than the ones that come with the iPod!
So the moral of this story, be nice to tech support and good things will come to you!. (It helps if they are the opposite sex so you can flirt!)

The left speaker didn't "just break", it was sounding a lot quieter than the right and had no bass. Bad design? Bad quality control? Cheap parts? Who knows.
One thing to note is that it was not really obvious at first. Only when listening to the left and right in turn using the same ear was the difference a lot more obvious. Maybe the brain compensates for the lack of bass in one ear.
